Kirkwood wins twice in Florida

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. —  Sulliam Rios Reyes scored on a balk in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday as the Kirkwood baseball team nipped Miami-Hamilton, 7-6, in Winter Haven, Fla.

Rios Reyes led off the ninth with a walk, went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ozzie Adams and reached third on a wild pitch. Miami-Hamilton walked two batters to intentionally load the bases, but Rios Reyes trotted home with the winning run on the balk.

Adams went 3-for-4 for the Eagles. Rios Reyes was 2-for-3, scored three runs and had two RBIs. Tyler Butz had a triple and two RBIs.

Jeffrey Castillo pitched six strong innings for Kirkwood, allowing three runs on one hit and five walks. Shane Kemp picked up the victory in relief.

The Eagles (4-0) rallied for a 5-4 victory over the University of Connecticut at Avery Point in their second game Saturday.

Rima eager for Year 2 with Kirkwood

Todd Rima steered the Kirkwood Community College baseball team to a winning record last season after inheriting a ballclub that finished below .500 the previous year.

Now he's ready for the next step in rebuilding the program.

The Eagles finished 30-14 overall and 13-11 in ICCAC conference games in 2013 after going 21-33 and 9-15 the year before under Tim Evans. Rima likes what he's seen so far.

Kirkwood signs 8 new baseball players

Kirkwood baseball coach Todd Rima is intrigued by the prospect of having a 6-foot-8 pitcher on the mound with his long arms, long legs and 88 mph fastball.

His name is Nick Bruno and he hails from Boylan Central Catholic High School in Rockford, Ill. He won't be here this season, but he's on his way for the 2015 campaign.

Rima has signed eight high school seniors to letters-of-intent for the 2015 season.

"Bruno is probably the most intriguing guy in our recruiting class," said Rima. "I cannot wait to see where he's at in two years.

"He's kind of the sleeper in this class. In the long run, we might have stolen one."
