Prior helps No.11 Eagles sweep twinbill

Brooke Prior went 5-for-6, drove in four runs and pitched a one-hitter Saturday as Kirkwood cruised to a pair of victories over Southwestern, 9-0 and 10-0, at Kirkwood.

Both games lasted only five innings due to the eight-run mercy rule.

Prior went 2-for-3 and drove in two runs in the first game. She was 3-for-3 with two more RBIs and pitched her one-hitter in the nightcap, raising her record to 7-0.

The 11th-ranked Eagles raised their records to 30-8 overall and 17-1 in the conference. Southwestern fell to 18-12 overall and 9-9 in the league.

Kirkwood baseball sweeps Southwestern

The Kirkwood Eagles won a pair of ballgames in vastly different ways Saturday against Southwestern at the Kirkwood field.

First came a 7-6 squeaker with a four-run rally in the bottom of the seventh, then came a 15-2 laugher in five innings.

The twin-killing raised Kirkwood's records to 20-13 overall and 8-6 in the conference. Southwestern fell to 8-21 overall and 4-10 in the league.

Shortstop Sulliam Rios Reyes went 6-for-8 for Kirkwood in the twinbill.

Biehl slugs 2 homers as Eagles split

DIXON, Ill. - Lexie Biehl belted two more home runs Friday as the 11th-ranked Kirkwood softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Sauk Valley in Dixon, Ill.

Kirkwood won the first game, 20-1, in five innings. Sauk Valley captured the nightcap, 7-5.

Biehl went 2-for-4 with a double, home run, two RBIs and three runs scored in the opener. Brooke Prior was a 2-for-4 with a homer, four RBIs and three runs scored.

Alicia Crivaro socked a home run and drove in four runs for the Eagles in the opener. Natalie Clark also hit a home run and drove in four runs.

Nicky Simpson pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts.

Doyle paces KCC golfers at Waverly

WAVERLY - Eddie Doyle fired a 2-over-par 74 Friday to help Kirkwood take the 18-hole lead at the Wartburg Spring Invitational at Prairie Links Golf Club in Waverly.

Kirkwood finished the first round at 307 for a six-shot lead over Nebraska Wesleyan. Blaine Buhr of Kirkwood is tied for third at 4-over 76 and Dylan Daxon is tied for fifth at 5-over 77.

Coe is in last place in the 10-team tournament at 367. The final round is Saturday.

Eagles belt 6 homers in sweep

The Kirkwood Eagles hit six home runs Wednesday and swept an ICCAC conference doubleheader from Ellsworth, 11-0 and 13-2, at Kirkwood.

Both softball games lasted only five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. Nicky Simpson pitched a no-hitter for Kirkwood in the opener.

Lexie Biehl socked two homers and drove in eight runs in the doubleheader. Brooke Prior, Jasmine Ragusi, Natalie Clark and Lexi Quandt also connected for round-trippers in the twinbill.

Kirkwood splits slugfest with Blackhawks

The Kirkwood and Southeastern junior college baseball teams engaged in an old-fashioned slugfest at the Kirkwood field Saturday afternoon and finished with a split.

The fourth-ranked Blackhawks socked Kirkwood 20-9 in the first game. The Eagles rebounded for a 14-11 triumph in the nightcap.

The two clubs also split a doubleheader in West Burlington on Friday.

Kirkwood is now 18-13 overall and 6-6 in the ICCAC conference. Southeastern is 25-8 and 9-3.

Randy Perez belted a home run and drove in six runs for Kirkwood in the second game. Southeastern bolted to a 6-1 lead, but the Eagles erupted for nine runs in the bottom of the fourth inning for a 10-6 lead.

KCC softball sweeps with 5 homers

FORT DODGE - The Kirkwood Eagles slugged five more home runs Saturday and swept a conference doubleheader from Iowa Central, 7-2 and 9-4, in Fort Dodge.

The victories lifted the 11th-ranked Eagles to 25-7 overall and 13-1 in the conference, tied with DMACC for first place.

Kirkwood leads all NJCAA Division II teams in the nation with 69 home runs in 32 games.

Brooke Prior went 4-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs for Kirkwood in the second game. She also pitched the first five innings of the contest. Lexie Biehl hit a home run and drove in two runs.

Biehl also had a home run and two RBIs in the first game. Natalie Clark also provided a homer and two RBIs. Nicky Simpson and Allie Mengler shared the pitching. Mengler also pitched in the second game.

Iowa Central fell to 31-13 overall and 8-6 in the conference.

   

Kirkwood golfers slip to 2nd place

ANKENY - The Kirkwood men's golf team finished in second place at the Iowa Central Invitational at Otter Creek Friday in Ankeny.

The Eagles had a three-stroke lead over DMACC entering the final 18 holes, but DMACC turned in the best round Friday and trimmed Kirkwood by two shots in the final standings, 598 to 600.

Hunter VanVeen of DMACC ran away with the individual title with a 36-hole score of 2-under-par 140 with consecutive rounds of 70.

Dylan Daxon and Ben Jones finished at 8-over 150 for Kirkwood. Blaine Buhr actually led Kirkwood with a 149, but he competed as an individual and not with the team. If Buhr's scored had counted in the team standings, the Eagles would have won the championship by two strokes.

Kirkwood nearly sweeps No. 4 Southeastern

WEST BURLINGTON - The Kirkwood baseball team came within three outs of sweeping the fourth-ranked team in the country Friday, but the Eagles had to settle for a split instead.

Kirkwood edged Southeastern 5-4 in the first game and had a 3-2 lead entering the bottom of the ninth inning of the nightcap, but the Blackhawks tied the score in the bottom of the ninth and prevailed 4-3 in 12 innings.

The split left Kirkwood at 17-12 overall and 5-5 in the ICCAC conference. Southeastern is 24-7 and 8-2.

The same two teams are scheduled for another twinbill, this time at Kirkwood Saturday at 1 p.m.

Nick Drahozal (3-2) pitched another strong game in the opener for Kirkwood. He tossed six innings and allowed only one earned run, with seven strikeouts and two walks. Randy Perez pitched the bottom of the seventh and final inning for his second save.

Eagles sweep Iowa Lakes with 5 HRs

ESTHERVILLE - The Kirkwood softball team belted five home runs Friday and swept a conference doubleheader from Iowa Lakes, 16-1 and 10-0, in Estherville.

Brooke Prior pitched a no-hitter in the second game for Kirkwood. Both games lasted only five innings to the 10-run mercy rule.

The victories lifted the 11th-ranked Eagles to 23-7 overall and 11-1 in the league. Iowa Lakes fell to 3-20 overall and 2-10 in the league.

Kirkwood leads all NJCAA Division II teams with 64 home runs in 30 games.

Riley Ogden went 3-for-3 with two homers and five RBIs in the first game. Lexie Biehl was 2-for-3 with a homer and three RBIs. Alicia Crivaro went 3-for-3 with a double and three runs scored. Mallory Neubauer hit a home run and drove in two runs.
