Kirkwood falls to Iowa Western in OT

These rematches are killing the Kirkwood men's basketball team.

It happened again Saturday when the eighth-ranked Eagles blew a 16-point lead and lost to Iowa Western, 82-76, in overtime at Johnson Hall.

This is the third time Kirkwood (10-3) has lost a rematch with an opponent after beating them the first time around.

The Eagles topped John Wood 84-63 in their first meeting this season, then dropped the rematch 75-65. They beat Southeastern 72-63 the first time, then got hammered 95-66 in the rematch.

And now it's happened with Iowa Western.

Kirkwood women roll by Marshalltown

The Kirkwood women's basketball team was credited with 26 assists on its 27 field goals during Saturday's 80-45 romp past Marshalltown at Johnson Hall.

That tells you one of two things: Either the official statistician was extremely generous handing out assists or the seventh-ranked Eagles passed the ball extremely well.

It was the latter.

"We were unselfish," said Kirkwood Coach Kim Muhl. "That's the big thing with this group. When they start passing the ball, they're much better."

Tyra Polite collected seven assists and Taylor Silva had five to lead the way, but 10 different Eagles had at least one assist as Kirkwood zipped the ball around the floor.

"We're starting to get better," said Muhl after his club raised its record to 8-4 with a strong overall performance.

Kirkwood gets back in win column

MOLINE Ill. - Ajay Lawton scored 22 points and former Linn-Mar standout Matt Lassen added 20 as Kirkwood broke a two-game losing streak Tuesday night with an 89-75 road victory over Black Hawk College.

Jordan Ashton added 17 and Kareem Martin 11 for the Eagles (10-2). Kirkwood connected on 12 3-point baskets. Lassen hit five and Lawton four from beyond the arc.

Blake Lowderman led Black Hawk (5-5) with 18 points. Brandon Vice finished with 14.

Kirkwood returns home to play its final game of 2014 on Saturday, hosting Iowa Western Community College in a 3 p.m. game at Johnson Hall.

No.3 Kirkwood men drilled by SCC

WEST BURLINGTON - What a difference three weeks can make in the life of a men's basketball team.

The third-ranked Kirkwood Eagles were plastered by Southeastern Community College, 95-66, Saturday night in West Burlington.

The 29-point shellacking came exactly 21 days after the Eagles spanked SCC, 72-63, in Cedar Rapids on Nov. 15.

Josh Ross popped in four 3-pointers and scored 22 points for the winners.

No.7 Eagles surge by John Wood

QUINCY, Ill. - The seventh-ranked Kirkwood Eagles finished the first half with a 16-0 run Saturday and trimmed John Wood Community College, 71-68, in a women's basketball game in Quincy, Ill.

The Eagles trailed 27-17 when they caught fired in the first half and grabbed a 33-27 advantage at intermission.

Kirsten Larson popped in five 3-pointers and scored 17 points for Kirkwood (7-4). Casey Miles collected 15 points for the Eagles. Cassidy Clark grabbed seven rebounds.

Shea O'Brien scored 17 points for John Wood (5-3).

Ariel Sneed led a balanced attack with 12 points Wednesday night as the seventh-ranked Kirkwood Eagles drubbed the William Penn junior varsity, 83-31, at Johnson Hall.

Aliyah Issac scored 11 points for the Eagles (6-4) and Peyton Bockholt had 10. Madison Wood finished with eight points, six rebounds and three blocks. Kaycee Kallenberger had eight rebounds.

No.3 Eagles dumped by John Wood

The Kirkwood men's basketball team went from being unloved and unranked all the way to No. 3 in the new national poll Tuesday, but the glossy achievement turned sour by the end of the night.

The John Wood Blazers dominated the sluggish Eagles from start to finish and handed Kirkwood its first loss of the season, 75-65, in a non-conference game at Johnson Hall.

"We're not the No. 3 team in the country. Bottom line," proclaimed unhappy Kirkwood Coach Bryan Petersen, whose club fell to 9-1.

They certainly were not the No. 3 team Tuesday night. The Eagles shot poorly from the field, had trouble finishing at the rim, played porous defense and got pounded on the backboards.

The Eagles belted John Wood by 21 points when they met four weeks ago in Quincy, Ill., but this was an entirely different story. The Blazers surged to a 17-point lead in the first half and Kirkwood never fully recovered.

KCC women knock off Australians

Kirkwood Coach Kim Muhl says the Eagles are still looking for their identity as a basketball team this season, but that was better than Kirsten Larson's predicament Tuesday night.

She was looking for part of a front tooth.

Larson popped in three 3-pointers and scored 13 points but was inured in the second half during Kirkwood's 79-59 victory over the South Australia Institute of Sports at Johnson Hall.

Larson banged heads with Sophie Houral of Australia, bit through her upper lip and lost part of a tooth in the collision. Her mouth was a bloody mess and she spent the rest of the game with an ice bag on her face.

"Don't kiss anyone tonight," teased Muhl after the game.

Kirkwood hits 19 triples in victory

COUNCIL BLUFFS - The red-hot Kirkwood Eagles torched the nets for nineteen 3-pointers Saturday night and dropped Iowa Western, 95-82, in a men's junior college game in Council Bluffs.

Ajay Lawton and Jordan Ashton made six 3-pointers and Matt Lassen hit five of them. Hunter Rhodes and Kareem Martin Jr. also made a 3-pointer as the Eagles shot a sizzling 19 of 31 from behind the arc for 61.3 percent overall.

Lawton was 6-for-11, Ashton was 6-for-8 and Lassen was 5-for-6 in the incredible display of shooting.

Ashton finished with 28 points and five rebounds. Lawton had 22 points, seven assists, five rebounds and no turnovers. Lassen scored all 15 of his points on 3-pointers.
