Schenck-Joblinske commits to Hawkeyes

Kirkwood outfielder Eric Schenck-Joblinske will continue his college baseball career with the Iowa Hawkeyes, Kirkwood Coach Todd Rima confirmed Tuesday.

Schenck-Joblinske originally committed to Texas A&M.

Schenck-Joblinske, from Dike-New Hartford, hit .309 with one home run, 27 RBIs and 20 stolen bases for Kirkwood this past season as a sophomore. He is currently playing for the Mankato Moon Dogs in the Northwoods League.

Shane Kemp, a pitcher and outfielder for Kirkwood, plans to continue his college career at George Washington University in the Atlantic-10 Conference. Kemp, from Waterloo Columbus, had a 1-0 record and 5.68 ERA in 10 appearances for the Eagles this season. He hit .288 with 12 RBIs.

Kirkwood lands big man from Sweden

Kirkwood Coach Bryan Petersen has not had a chance to watch Martin Hyberg play basketball in person, but he's studied film of the 6-foot-10 center from Sweden and likes what he's seen.

Hyberg comes highly recommended from a friend of Petersen's in the coaching business and has good credentials, having played for the U20 Sweden National Team.

"We've watched film on him, but we haven't seen him in person," Petersen said Friday. "So you don't really know until they get here, but we're expecting him to come over and impact our team right away."

Petersen has landed a big recruiting class with 11 new players, including nine scholarship players and two walk-ons. He needed a big class, because only five players will be returning from the unit that went 21-10 this season.

Kirkwood softball team falls short

FORT DODGE - The Kirkwood softball team enjoyed a terrific regular season with a 25-game winning streak and a No.4 national ranking, but the year had an unhappy ending for the Eagles Sunday at the NJCAA Region XI tournament in Fort Dodge.

DMACC defeated Kirkwood for the second straight day, this time 7-1 in the championship round to win the regional title.

DMACC topped the Eagles Saturday in the winner's bracket final, 5-1.

Kirkwood defeated Marshalltown, 8-0, in the loser's bracket final Sunday to gain another shot at DMACC, but the Eagles could not mount enough of an offense to stay alive.

Kirkwood won the conference title and finished the season with a 52-8 record.
