Kirkwood women jump to No.7 in rankings

The Kirkwood Community College women's basketball team climbed 11 spots from No. 18 to No. 7 in the new NJCAA Division II rankings Wednesday.

The Eagles have played a tough schedule this season against some of the top NJCAA Division I teams in the Midwest and have an 8-3 record.

Lake Michigan College is ranked No.1 this week.

Kirkwood women fall at Iowa Western

COUNCIL BLUFFS - Iowa Western Community College built a 19-point halftime lead and defeated Kirkwood, 78-60, in a women's junior college basketball game Saturday in Council Bluffs.

Kianna Jacobs led Kirkwood (8-3) with 20 points. Whitney Rohrbach scored 10 points for the Eagles.

Tyisha Smith led Iowa Western (13-0) with 16 points. The Reivers are ranked No. 4 in NJCAA Division I.

Litts named JUCO All-American in volleyball

Kirkwood sophomore Lexi Litts has been named a first team NJCAA All-American in volleyball after helping the Eagles place ninth at the national tournament.

Litts, a Kennedy graduate, collected 1,576 assists and was named to the All-American team as a setter. She made the all-tournament team at the national event in Ohio.

Ashley Gonzalez of Kirkwood was named a second team All-American as a hitter.

   

Eagles shrug off poor start to upset NIACC

Totally lost does not always mean a loss.

Kirkwood shrugged off a mistake-prone first half  and beat third-ranked NIACC, 81-68, Friday night in a men's junior college basketball game at Johnson Hall.

Kirkwood (7-5, 1-0 ICCAC) committed many of its 23 turnovers in the first half, but surprisingly only trailed 34-32 at halftime.

“They were who we thought they were,” Kirkwood Coach Doug Wagemester said of NIACC. "They did exactly what we prepared for and our kids were totally lost.”

Kirkwood drops spirited battle to Indian Hills

The Kirkwood Eagles got into a horserace with a bunch of thoroughbreds from Indian Hills Community College Tuesday night at Johnson Hall.

The thoroughbreds won by a nose, 95-88.

"Man, a lot of horses in that stable," Kirkwood Coach Doug Wagemester whistled after the 40 minutes of mayhem had ended.

Indian Hills has five players who have signed scholarships to play at NCAA Division I schools next season and a few more who will join them this spring. Kirkwood doesn't have anybody like that yet, but it was a good battle nonetheless.

Kirkwood women blast Ellsworth, 82-37

IOWA FALLS -- Kirkwood scored 52 points in the second half and blew away Ellsworth, 82-37, Tuesday night in women''s junior college basketball.

The Eagles (8-2, 1-0) knocked down 5 of 6 3-pointers in the second half.

Kirkwood led 30-19 at halftime. The Eagles opened the second half with a 38-6 run that blew the game open.

2 future Cyclones face Kirkwood Tuesday

Two future members of the Iowa State men's basketball program will play in Cedar Rapids Tuesday night when 10th-ranked Indian Hills faces Kirkwood at Johnson Hall.

Richard Amardi, 6-foot-9, from Canada and Dustin Hogue, 6-5, from New York signed with the Cyclones last month.

Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Indian Hills (8-1) is averaging 103 points per game and has topped 100 points on five occasions, with high games of 118 and 117.

The Warriors beat Kirkwood, 94-89, in Ottumwa on Nov. 3.

Kirkwood trims SCC with balanced attack

WEST BURLINGTON - Gage Heffernan led a balanced attack with 13 points Saturday night as Kirkwood defeated Southeastern Community College, 73-66, in a men's basketball game in West Burlington.

J.C. Fuller, Taylor Olson and Kevin Hunter scored 11 points apiece for the Eagles (6-4) and Devan Douglas added 10. Kasey Semler, who bruised his right hand against Marshalltown Wednesday, played Saturday and made two 3-pointers for six points.

Jordan Stevens led Southeastern (9-2) with 19 points.

Jacobs helps Kirkwood women slay Moberly

Kianna "Kiki" Jacobs is not insulted when you say she plays basketball like a guy.

"That's a compliment towards me," she said.

She's tough, physical, aggressive and doesn't mind contact under the basket.

Jacobs displayed all her skills Saturday afternoon as Kirkwood handed 17th-ranked Moberly (Mo.) its first loss of the season, 63-44, on the final day of the Kirkwood Classic.

Kirkwood women top Northeast in OT

Kim Muhl has 14 players on his active roster at Kirkwood Community College with all shapes, sizes and ability.

He needed them all Friday night.

The Eagles collected their best victory of the season by topping Northeast Community College, 82-72, in overtime in the first round of the Kirkwood Classic at Johnson Hall.
