Eagles escape NIACC in OT

With wins over two ranked foes in three days a week ago, you know Kirkwood has a pretty good women's basketball team.

Add luck and you get a hard-fought, 78-68, overtime win over NIACC on Saturday in a conference game at Johnson Hall.

Luck got the Eagles to overtime and then they were good as they dominated the extra session.

“We were lucky to win,” Kirkwood Coach Kim Muhl said. “We missed layups, missed free throws, and they shot it well.”

Olson nets 20 as Kirkwood tops Malcolm X

WEST BURLINGTON - Taylor Olson poured in a career-high 20 points Friday night as Kirkwood defeated Malcolm X College, 80-70, in the first round of the Southeastern Community College Classic.

Olson, a freshman from Cedar Rapids Jefferson, hit three 3-pointers in the first half and went 7-for-7 at the foul line in the second half.

J.C. Fuller scored 16 points for the Eagles (8-7). Devan Douglas scored 12 points, Jalen Currie had 11 points and Gage Heffernan chipped in with 10.

Eagles belt No.8 Illinois Central for title

EAST PEORIA, Ill. - The Kirkwood Eagles completed an impressive performance at the Illinois Central Classic Sunday afternoon by topping No.8 Illinois Central, 59-41, in the championship game of the eight-team holiday tournament.

Kianna Jacobs collected a double-double for the seventh-ranked Eagles (13-3) with 15 points and 11 rebounds and made the all-tournament team. Alexis Fitzpatrick also made the all-tournament team for Kirkwood.

Kirkwood began the tournament Friday with a 75-60 victory over Cincinnati State. The Eagles drubbed top-ranked Lake Michigan, 61-41, in the semifinals Saturday and won all three of their games by an average of 17.7 points.

Kirkwood women drub No.1 Lake Michigan

EAST PEORIA, Ill. - The Kirkwood Eagles walloped top-ranked Lake Michigan, 61-41, in the semifinals of the Illinois Central Classic Saturday.

Kianna Jacobs led the seventh-ranked Eagles (12-3) with 19 points and nine rebounds.

Kirkwood led by just two points at halftime, 29-27, but the Eagles used a 16-3 spurt at the start of the second half to take command. Kirkwood held Lake Michigan (10-2) to just 14 points in the second half.

Kirkwood will face No.8 Illinois Central in the championship game of the holiday tournament Sunday at 4 p.m.

Kirkwood women earn date with No.1 team

EAST PEORIA, Ill. - Kianna Jacobs scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds Friday as Kirkwood pulled away from Cincinnati State, 75-60, in the opening round of the Illinois Central Classic.

The 7th-ranked Eagles (11-3) will face top-ranked Lake Michigan (10-1) in the semifinals at 6 p.m. on Saturday.

Kirkwood led 31-30 at halftime, but Jacobs, Friday Chuol and Whitney Henderson combined for 26 points in the second half to help secure the victory.
