Coe wrestlers blanked by No. 1 Wartburg

WAVERLY – The 15th-ranked Coe wrestling team was humbled by top-ranked Wartburg on Friday, falling to the Knights 33-0.

Wartburg’s third-ranked 174-pounder, Eric Devos, won a 3-2 decision over Coe’s top-ranked Ryan Harrington in the marquee match of the night.

Faidley sets record for Coe swimmers

Corbin Faidley broke the school record in the 1,000-yard freestyle, but the Coe College men’s and women’s swimming teams each lost to Iowa Central Community College on Friday at Coe.

The Coe men lost 164-102, and the women lost 121-115.

Faidley won the 1,000 freestyle in 10 minutes, 51 seconds, beating his own school record by nearly 12 seconds for the Coe men.

Collin Flynn won the 200 backstroke in 2:02.47 for the fifth-best time in school history. Justin Sauter also won the 1- and 3-meter diving events and Andy Cheng took the 100 backstroke.

Ayaka Okamoto won the 50 freestyle in 24.40 seconds for the seventh-best time in school history to lead the Coe women. She also won the 200 backstroke.

Soccer great Wambach to speak at Coe

Abby Wambach, one of the world’s greatest soccer players of all time, will be the speaker for the 13th Coe College Contemporary Issues Forum at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 9, in Eby Fieldhouse.

Wambach is the all-time leading scorer in international soccer history with 184 career goals. She is also a leading voice for women’s sports as

well as for her generation of female soccer players and athletes.

A limited number of tickets are available for the event for $10 each. They can be purchased online at www.coe.edu/boxoffice, or by calling the Coe College Box Office at 399-8600, Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Wambach is a double Olympic gold medalist (2004 and 2012), FIFA Women's World Cup champion and the 2012 FIFA World Player of the Year. A six-time winner of the U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year award, Wambach has been a regular on the U.S. women's national soccer team since 2003.

Coe men socked by Wartburg

WAVERLY - Clifton Brown led five players into double figures with 20 points Wednesday night as the Wartburg Knights dunked Coe, 93-70, in an Iowa Conference men's basketball game at Levick Arena in Waverly.

Nate Woeste scored 14 points for Wartburg (10-8, 3-4). Nick Webber and Jordan Cannon added 11 points apiece and Ty Putchio netted 10.

Matt Meyer popped in 23 points for the Kohawks (7-11, 2-5). Matt Vonderhaar added 18 points.

Hobbs, Hansche spark Coe by Wartburg

WAVERLY - Aleena Hobbs scored 20 points Wednesday night and Mickey Hansche added 17 as the Coe women's basketball team trimmed Wartburg, 71-65, in an Iowa Conference game at Levick Arena in Waverly.

Hansche made the 200th 3-pointer of her career and became the 12th player in school history to surpass 900 points.

Hobbs and Allie Wirth grabbed nine rebounds for the Kohawks (12-6, 3-4). Jordan Holmes had five assists.

Coe took a precarious 63-62 lead into the final minute. Hansche hit a big 3-pointer with 25 seconds left to give the Kohawks a little breathing room at 66-62.

Holmes came up with a steal and hit two free throws for a 68-62 advantage. Wartburg hit a 3-pointer to pull within 68-65, but Hansche made two free throws and Wirth added another to finish the victory.
