Breitbach, bench power Coe women past BV

STORM LAKE - Hannah Breitbach scored 24 points and Mary Halvorson and Lindsey Buckles scored 17 apiece to lead Coe past Buena Vista, 97-92, Wednesday in Iowa Conference women's basketball.

Coe (11-9, 6-3) won for the fifth time in its last six games.

Mackenzie Reed added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Kohawks.

Coe's Halvorson named academic all-district

Coe senior Mary Halvorson has been named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District First Team.

Halvorson, from Waukon, is averaging 12.4 points and 5.6 rebounds for the Coe basketball team. She has scored in double figures in 10 games, including a career-high 28 points at Carleton.

To be eligible for the academic team, a student-athlete must have a 3.3 cumulative GPA and have the proper athletic accomplishments to be placed on the ballot.

 

Wirth siblings share more than Coe

Andrew and Allie Wirth are closer than your average siblings in college. Closer geographically, that is.

The Wirth siblings, from Cedar Falls, both play basketball for Coe College.

Their mother, Carol Wirth, said Andrew could shoot a basketball when he was two years old, and Allie started playing because she “always liked to do whatever her brother did.”

Kohawk swimmers win 8 events

Andi Queisner and Lindsay Meade won two events Saturday for the Coe women's swimming team in a dual meet against Grinnell at the Coe natatorium.

Quiesner captured the 50 freestyle and Meade won the 500 freestyle, and they joined Laura Finneseth and Kenni Sterns on the triumphant 400 freestyle relay.

Kendallyn Recker claimed the 3-meter diving and Chloe Drapes captured the 200 IM for the Kohawks.

The Coe men's swimming team got victories from Cody Bauman in 3-meter diving, Tim Bosn in the 200 and the 400 freestyle relay with Logan Barnes, Aaron Buseman, Andy Cheng and Tucker Dangremond.

Grinnell won the women's meet, 181-88, and captured the men's competition 184-83.

 

Kohawks fall short at Dubuque, 71-65

DUBUQUE - The Coe men's basketball team gave the No.1 club in the Iowa Conference a good game Saturday before falling short in the final seconds.

Dubuque trimmed the Kohawks, 71-65, before 575 fans at the Stoltz Center.

Coe took a 45-44 lead with 12:50 left on a 3-pointer by Jacob Timm, but Dubuque scored seven straight points for a 51-45 advantage.
