Mount Mercy University - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

No. 20 Mustangs shot down by Waldorf

Mount Mercy coach Aaron Jennings said two months ago that his team's defense (or lack thereof) would determine how far the Mustangs get this season.

He's still saying it.

The 20th-ranked Mustangs suffered massive breakdowns on defense in the first half Thursday night and lost to Waldorf, 99-92, in an NAIA shootout at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

Waldorf poured in 65 points in the first half and shot 62.3 percent for the game as Mount Mercy's eight-game winning streak came to a screeching halt.

All-American Erik Brewer sparkled with 28 points for Waldorf, Tyler Parrish popped in 25 points and June Prowell added 22 as they riddled the Mustangs all night.

"That's our Big Three," said Waldorf coach Nigel Jenkins.

Brewer, Parrish and Prowell combined for 75 points and shot 28 for 41 from the floor.

No. 22 Mustangs win 7th in row

Chris Ford led a balanced attack with 12 points Saturday as the 22nd-ranked Mount Mercy men's basketball team trimmed Viterbo, 79-74, in an NAIA game at the Hennessey Recreation Center.

Ford led five Mustangs into double figures. Alex Houston scored 11 points and Tre Wagner, Mychael Brawner-Henley and Ben Struss all scored 10 points apiece for the winners.

Ford broke a 69-69 tie with a 3-pointer with 68 seconds left to give Mount Mercy (17-5) a 72-69 lead. The Mustangs were clinging to a 75-74 lead when Struss went to work in the final seconds. His layup gave Mount Mercy a 77-74 edge with 22 seconds remaining, then Viterbo missed a 3-pointer that would have tied the game with 14 seconds to go.

Struss hit two free throws with 13 seconds left to make it 79-74 and secure the victory as Mount Mercy won its seventh game in a row.

The Mustangs got a big lift from their subs with a 39-6 advantage in bench points.

Jake Bamke scored 25 points for Viterbo (7-13) and Ethan Haberman had 24. Viterbo trailed by 20 points at halftime, but the visitors staged a strong comeback in the second half.
