Women's Summer Collegiate Fast-Pitch Softball League

IWSL enjoys Hall of Fame game

The Iowa Women's Softball League put an exclamation point on the 2018 campaign Saturday by playing an exhibition game at Ellis Park as part of the Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame festivities.

The National League team defeated the American League, 4-1, before a nice crowd that enjoyed watching college softball players from a mixture of state institutions.

Lauren Kuch of Kirkwood gave the National League a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning with a two-run single. The Nationals made it 4-0 in the fifth inning on a single by Tianna Drahn of UNI, an RBI double by Avery Guy of DMACC, a single by Kuch and an RBI single by Emily Oler of Mount Mercy.

The American League team scored its run in the seventh inning on a consecutive infield singles by Tawny Menster of Mount Mercy, Maddy Ryan of Coe and Brie Tauber of Clarke, followed by a bases-loaded walk by Abby Downs of UNI with nobody out.

Emma Olejniczak of UNI worked out of further trouble with the tying runs on base with a ground ball and two fly balls to end the game.

IWSL joins Softball Hall of Fame weekend

Players from the Iowa Women's Softball League will play an exhibition game this Saturday as part of the Cedar Rapids Softball Hall of Fame  weekend at Ellis Park.

The exhibition game will feature 22 players from the IWSL and is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m. on Diamond 1.

"We are honored to be participating in the Hall of Fame weekend," said IWSL director Jim Ecker. "We greatly appreciation the invitation from the Hall of Fame committee to showcase our college softball league before the local softball community."

The Iowa Women's Softball League, founded in 2017, will be entering its third year in 2019 with an Eastern Division in Cedar Rapids and a Central Division in Indianola.

The Softball Hall of Fame weekend begins Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the start of a 16-inch slo-pitch tournament. The 12-team field  features many of the top teams in the state, including Westside Lounge  of Cedar Rapids, Stadium Bar & Grill from Cedar Rapids, Old Timers Tavern & Blitz from Marshalltown, and Chuck's from Des Moines.

Drahn, Biedermann lift IWSL to 26 players

Tianna Drahn of UNI and Kylee Biedermann of Clarke will be returning to the Iowa Women's Softball League for the 2019 campaign.

The two premier outfielders registered last week, giving the IWSL a total of 26 players who have taken advantage of the early registration period.

This early registration period is for all players who participated in the IWSL this season. Anyone who registers by Aug. 31 will receive a 50 percent discount and pay $50 instead of the regular $100 player fee.

Anyone who registers between Sept. 1 and Dec. 31 will get a 25 percent discount and pay $75, whether they played in the league this past summer or not. And anyone who registers between Jan. 1 and April 30 will be charged the full $100 player fee.

24 players have joined IWSL for 2019

Twenty-four players have already registered for the Iowa Women's Softball League for next summer.

IWSL ends successful second season

There was more good pitching, hitting and defense Sunday as the Iowa Women's Softball League finished the season on a strong note.

Ironside Apparel ended the year on a high note by winning both of its game for the first time this season at Mount Mercy.

Bosch Financial also finished with a flourish with an 8-0 victory over Metro Sports Report at Simpson College.

Lauren Kuch of Kirkwood hit a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning to snap a scoreless ballgame and help Ironside Apparel blank Emil's Hideaway, 2-0, in the first game at Mount Mercy.

Adara Opiola of Northern Iowa and Taylor Kurtz of Dubuque scored on Kuch's clutch double. Ally Johnson of UNI socked a triple for the winners.

Natalie Halvorson of Kirkwood starred in the circle for Ironside Apparel.
