Gabi Carter joins MSR softball league

Gabi Carter will return home to Swisher this May after playing  softball at Indiana State University, but the Cedar Rapids Prairie grad would like to keep playing in a competitive league this summer.

That's why she has joined the new Iowa Women's Softball League that is being organized by the Metro Sports Report.

Carter is the sixth NCAA Division I player to join the league and the 28th player overall.

Carter, an infielder, graduated from Prairie in 2015 and had a sensational year as a freshman at Kirkwood last season. She hit .442  with 21 home runs and 84 RBIs, helping the Eagles compile a 58-6  record and place fifth at the national tournament.

Carter was named a junior college All-American at Kirkwood and accepted a scholarship to join Indiana State this year as a sophomore.

The Iowa Women's Softball League has been created by the Metro Sports Report to give college players an opportunity to play in a competitive summer league. It's the only program of its kind in Iowa and is gaining enrollment on a daily basis.

Morgan Smith joins MSR softball league

The new Iowa Women's Softball League has added another talented player from the Quad Cities.

Morgan Smith, a former team captain and all-conference catcher at  Davenport North, has become the third player from the Quad Cities and the 27th overall to join the league.

Smith is currently a freshman at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington. She joins DoniRay Mayhew of Bettendorf and Lexi Ferrari of Rock Island Alleman as members of the Quad Cities connection. Mayhew and Ferrari are both at Kirkwood.

Smith was the starting catcher at Davenport North for five straight years, beginning as an eighth grader in 2012. She hit .379, .358 and .364 during her last three years in high school and also was a two-time selection to all-academic teams.

The Iowa Women's Softball League has been created by the Metro Sports Report to give college players an opportunity to play in a competitive summer league. It's the only program of its kind in Iowa and is  gaining enrollment on a daily basis.

The league is open to anyone who is currently playing college softball in Iowa, as well as all Iowans who are competing at out-of-state schools.

Megan Kublik joins new MSR softball league

Another talented player from Kirkwood Community College has joined the new Iowa Women's Softball League that will begin play this summer.

Megan Kublik, a freshman outfielder from Wilton, is the eighth player from Kirkwood to join the league and the 26th player overall.

The other Kirkwood players in the program are Taylor Nearad, Maddie Hansen, Lexi Kinnaird, Morgan Frost, Lexi Ferrari, Monika Bevans and DoniRay Mayhew.

Kublik was a three time all-state selection at Wilton High School in  2014, 2015 and 2016. She finished her prep career with 29 home runs and 124 RBIs and set several school records for round-trippers.

Timmerman joins new MSR softball league

Cedar Rapids Kennedy grad Paige Timmerman has become the 25th college  player to join the new Iowa Women's Softball League that will begin  play this summer.

Timmerman, now a freshman at Luther College, hit .431 for Kennedy last  season with three home runs, 15 doubles and 43 RBIs, helping the  Cougars win the Mississippi Valley Conference title and finish with a  37-5 record.

Timmerman was named to the all-conference and all-Metro teams as a  sophomore, junior and senior. She served as Kennedy's captain last season and also was a member of the National Honor Society.

Timmerman is a versatile athlete who can play the infield, outfield or  catch. She is the third Kennedy grad to enroll in the new league, joining Tianna Drahn (UNI) and Peyton Baskerville (Mount Mercy).

Ferrari, Mayhew, Christner join softball league

Three more players with outstanding credentials have joined the new Iowa Women's Softball League for the 2017 campaign.

Lexi Ferrari of Kirkwood, DoniRae Mayhew of Kirkwood and Morgan  Christner of Illinois State are the latest players to enroll, becoming  the 22nd, 23rd and 24th players in the program.

Ferrari, a middle infielder, hit .398 with 50 RBIs for Kirkwood last  season as a freshman and helped the Eagles reach the national  tournament. She earned all-state honors during her prep career at Alleman Catholic High School in Rock Island, Ill.

Mayhew, a pitcher and corner infielder, received all-state honors  during all five of her years at Bettendorf High School. She finished her prep career this past summer with 59 home runs, which ranks No. 3  all-time in Iowa, and is now a freshman at Kirkwood.

Christner, a pitcher, was a four time all-state selection at New  London High School and made the all-tournament  team at the state  tournament in 2013 and 2015. She led the state with a 405 strikeouts  in 2015 and is currently a freshman at Illinois State.
