East hits its target in win over J-Hawks

Bowling is a civilized sport. There’s very little finger pointing, tongue wagging or boasting.

So, when one of your friends, who happens to roll for one of your toughest competitors, tells you to beware before a meet, you know you’re going to get that team’s best shot.

Jefferson senior Dan Healy received just such a friendly warning from Waterloo East’s Jeff McCann before Friday’s Mississippi Valley Conference meet (Dec. 3) at May City Bowl.  McCann rolled doubles with Healy in national competition last summer.

Bowling is fastest-growing sport in Iowa

Too bad high school letter jackets are no longer in vogue.

Maybe then the newest group of prep letter winners would get more recognition.

Right now, high school bowling is mostly a sport followed by the bowlers themselves, their family members and few fans.

But that doesn’t mean it’s not popular.

“It is,” says Linn-Mar head boys coach Andy Diercks, “the fastest-growing high school and collegiate sport in the country.

“It’s had double-digit growth in terms of numbers in the past five or six years. And it just keeps growing.”

Jefferson - Boys Bowling

J-Hawks rout Xavier

Senior James Bruce rolled games of 233 and 268 for a two-game series of 501 as Jefferson opened the season with a 3,284-2,321 victory over Xavier at May City Bowl on Nov. 23.

Senior Dan Healy added a 481 series and freshman Austin Kluth contributed a 414 for the J-Hawks. Logan Buschette rolled a 174 high game for Xavier
