No.1 Saints playing air-tight defense

Xavier High School coaches and players give the same stock answer when you ask about their incredible defensive performances this year.

"We're doing OK" ... "We could do better" ... "There's room for improvement."

If that's true - if the top-ranked Saints can play even better than this on defense - then opponents might not score another point against them all season.

Jenks sisters win 3 events for Lions

Jennifer Jenks captured two events and Stephanie Jenks won another for the Linn-Mar Lions Tuesday night in a triangular swimming meet at the Coe College Natatorium.

The fourth-ranked Cedar Falls Tigers won the nine other events and dunked the 14th-ranked Lions, 116-70. Tipton also competed in the meet.

Jennifer Jenks won the 100 freestyle in 53.94 seconds and claimed the 100 backstroke in 1:02.16. She is ranked No.1 in the state in the 100 free and No.6 in the state in the 100 back.

Stephanie Jenks prevailed in the 500 freestyle in 5:27.72, a personal best. She is ranked 16th in the state in the 500 free.

RYAN SWEENEY (Xavier, Chicago Cubs) - Entered Tuesday's game in the fifth inning and was 3-for-3 with a run scored in the Cubs' 8-2 loss to the Pirates. Season stats: G - 66, Avg. - .285, AB - 179, H - 51, HR - 6, RBI - 19, SB - 1.

   

Provorov is quick study with RoughRiders

Ivan Provorov is like most 16-year-old kids in Iowa. He gets up early and dives into his classes, but there's a twist.

He does his schoolwork by himself. There's no school and no teachers in the room. And although he speaks English, it's all in Russian.

Provorov, who is from Yaroslavl, Russia, has moved here to play for the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders in the United States Hockey League. Some of the younger RoughRiders are attending school here, but Provorov is working on his own.

"I'm doing my Russian school on-line," he explained Monday after practice at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. "I think it's better for me to get done with it in three hours, and then I can work more on my hockey."
