Mark Atwater picks Coe over UNI

Linn-Mar senior Mark Atwater has decided to make football a family affair at Coe College next season.

Atwater said Monday night he's turned down an offer to join the University of Northern Iowa as a preferred walk-on and will join his father and brother with the Kohawks instead.

Howell claims wardrobe change helps Warriors

IOWA CITY - Cedar Rapids Washington Coach Frank Howell made a wardrobe change Tuesday night and said it was the reason his team won a hard-fought game at Iowa City Regina, 64-56.

Others may say it had more to do with good teamwork and excellent passing from a Warrior team that has been struggling in recent games.

"I decided to go with a less threatening color scheme to a more docile blue," Howell said when asked about shelving his traditional red sweater. "Actually, people seemed to play with some passion and we were pretty positive with each other. It was a good team we beat tonight."

Washington, still ranked seventh in 4A, improved to 11-6 overall, while unranked 2A Iowa City Regina dropped to 16-3.

Annie Dale picks UNI for soccer

Xavier High School senior Annie Dale has decided to continue her soccer career at the University of Northern Iowa.

Dale scored 25 goals last season as a junior and helped the Saints (19-2) win the Class 2A state title. She scored six goals in the state tournament and was named the captain of the all-tournament team.

Dale was a first-team pick on the IGHSAU Class 2A all-state soccer team.

She will sign a letter-of-intent with UNI at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Novak Conference Room at Xavier.
