Andersen wins Metro Spotlight Award

McKenna Andersen of Xavier is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Andersen, a 5-foot-9 senior, has been on a hot streak for the Xavier girls basketball team and is averaging 17.5 points with twelve 3-pointers in her last four ballgames.

The hot streak began when Andersen scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help the Saints defeat Davenport Assumption on Dec. 22 to give Coach Tom Lilly the 500th victory of his career.

Bre Smith wins Metro Spotlight Award

Bre Smith of Marion is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Smith, a senior, is one of the top bowlers in the state. She leads the Metro area with a 204.4 average and ranks fourth among all bowlers in the state.

Smith has rolled a high-game this year of 224 and a high-series of 438.

Briggs wins Metro Spotlight Award

Kyle Briggs of Cedar Rapids Jefferson is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Briggs, a senior, has gotten off to a terrific start with the Jefferson wrestling team this season. He is ranked No. 2 in Class 3A at 152 pounds and raised his record to 20-0 Saturday with a spotless performance at the Pipestone Duals in Pipestone, Minn.

Briggs went 5-0 at Pipestone with three pins, a technical fall and a forfeit.

Hayden wins Metro Spotlight Award

Sydney Hayden of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Hayden, a 5-foot-5 senior, has been a major factor for the Kennedy basketball team this season with her outside shooting, ballhandling and defense. She is averaging 13.9 points and leads Class 5A with 38 3-pointers in 10 games.

The Cougars are ranked No. 4 in the state with a 9-1 record.

Williams wins Metro Spotlight Award

Laveechie Williams of Cedar Rapids Washington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Williams, a 6-foot-5 senior, has blossomed into one of the top basketball players in the Mississippi Valley Conference this season. He is averaging a double-double with 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds per game despite playing with a broken nose.
