Ollinger wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Jefferson sophomore Amanda Ollinger is this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Ollinger is a star volleyball player for the J-Hawks and ranks second in the state with 460 kills, trailing only Mikaela Foecke of Holy Trinity. Ollinger, 6-foot-1, is tied for second in the state with 5.9 kills per set.

Ollinger has helped Jefferson compile a 15-17 record this season under new Coach Mary Kay Van Oort after finishing with a 4-32 mark last year.

Ollinger averaged 7.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and 2.1 assists for the Jefferson basketball team last season as a freshman. She already has scholarship offers from Iowa and Drake.

Bjornsen wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Clayton Bjornsen is this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Bjornsen played a big role in Washington's 26-10 victory over top-ranked Xavier at Saints Field Friday night. He caught two touchdown passes from Reid Snitker as the Warriors took a 14-0 lead and finished with three catches for 90 yards.

Bjornsen's touchdown receptions were for 30 and 33 yards. He also plays defense for Washington and helped keep Xavier's offense under wraps.

Bach wins Metro Spotlight Award

Marion sophomore Madison Bach is this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Bach has enjoyed a successful season with the Marion High School cross country team this season. She captured first place at the Washington (Iowa) Invitational Oct. 1 and has placed second at the Center Point-Urbana Invitational (Sept. 24) and the Independence Invitational (Sept. 28).

Bach is ranked 28th among Class 3A girls by the Iowa Track Coaches Association.

Drake wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Jefferson freshman Kelsey Drake is this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Drake has burst onto the scene this year as one of the top swimmers in the state. She ranks first in the state in the 100 butterfly (57.14), second in the 200 individual medley (2:11.36), fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.96) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (53.81).

Drake shattered the meet and pool records at the Kennedy Invitational Saturday when she captured the 100 butterfly in 57.7 seconds, clipping nearly three seconds off a mark that had stood since 1988.

Snitker wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Washington quarterback Reid Snitker is this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Snitker threw two touchdown passes in the final 61 seconds last Thursday night as the Warriors rallied from a 27-15 deficit to stun Waterloo West, 28-27, at Kingston Stadium.

Snitker, a junior, completed 22 of 31 passes for 222 yards. Both of his TD passes were to Isaiah Nimmers, including the game-winner with 15.5 seconds remaining.
