Torson wins Metro Spotlight award

Kayla Torson of Xavier has been selected as this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight award for high school girls, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Torson, a 5-foot-11 junior, is a member of the Xavier volleyball team that is ranked No.9 in Class 4A this season. The Saints upset Class 5A No.2 Johnston in the Washington tournament Saturday and reached the championship match.

Torson, an outside hitter with an uncanny ability to hang in the air for kill shots, was named second team All-State by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association in 2012 as a sophomore.

Heitland wins Metro Spotlight award

Drew Heitland from Kennedy has been selected as the winner of the Metro Spotlight award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Heitland has been a mainstay on the Kennedy varsity football team for three years. He is a tight end/defensive end on the club this season and caught seven passes for 89 yards and a touchdown in Kennedy's 28-24 victory over Prairie Friday night.

Heitland lost 50 pounds during the offseason to get in better shape and now stands 6-foot-3 and approximately 225 pounds.

Beyer wins Metro Spotlight award

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Tristan Beyer has been named this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Beyer is an outstanding track athlete and football player at Prairie.

He made 16 tackles at outside linebacker Thursday when the Hawks opened the season with a 24-7 victory over Jefferson. He had nine solo tackles and seven assists, along with an interception, sack and quarterback hurry.

Beyer helped Prairie win the 4x400 relay at the Drake Relays last spring as the leadoff runner. He placed second in the 400-meter dash at the Class 4A state track meet in 48.85 seconds and helped the Hawks finish third in the 4x400 relay at state.

Olson wins Metro Spotlight award

Cedar Rapids Jefferson junior Alyssa Olson is this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight award for high school girls, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Olson emerged as a star pitcher for the Jefferson softball team this past season and helped the J-Hawks finish fifth at the Class 5A state tournament. She compiled a 21-4 record and 1.03 ERA with 237 strikeouts in 161.1 innings.

Olson fired a shutout with 13 strikeouts when Jefferson upset top-ranked Muscatine, 7-0, in the regional finals to reach the state tournament. She was named first team all-state, all-Metro and all-Mississippi Valley Conference.

Jenks wins Metro Spotlight Award

Linn-Mar sophomore Stephanie Jenks is this week's winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Jenks is the top female distance runner in the state and a world-class athlete in the triathlon. She won the state cross country title last year as a freshman, then followed with two titles at the Drake Relays and two more titles at the state track meet.

Jenks placed second at the Pan American Triathlon Championships in Brazil this June as a member of Team USA. She also finished second at a major triathlon in Virginia and placed third at the USA Triathlon National Championships in Ohio.
