Gorman wins Metro Spotlight Award

Reagan Gorman of Washington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Gorman, a freshman, finished in second place at the 31st Prairie Invitational cross country meet Saturday morning. She covered the 5 kilometer course in 19 minutes, 38 seconds in her first varsity race for the Warriors. She trailed Iowa City West junior Gabby Skopec by 12 seconds.

Gorman stands only 5-foot-2 and weighs about 85 pounds, but she proved that size does not matter in distance running. She dominated her middle school races and has already stamped herself as one of the top runners in the state.

Dralle wins Metro Spotlight Award

Tyler Dralle of Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Dralle, a senior, carried the ball 40 times for 265 yards and four touchdowns Thursday night when the Cougars opened the 2015 football season with an exciting 34-31 victory over Iowa City West.

Dralle averaged 6.6 yards per carry and scored touchdowns on runs of 10, 7, 1 and 2 yards behind Kennedy's talented offensive line.

Jabe Gonder wins Metro Spotlight Award

Jabe Gonder of Cedar Rapids Washington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Gonder, beginning his senior year at Washington, fired a 1-over-par 71 and captured second place at the Mississippi Valley Conference Super Golf Meet at Jones Park on Thursday.

Gonder led the Warriors to the team championship by 12 shots over Iowa City West.

Drake wins Metro Spotlight Award

Kelsey Drake of Linn-Mar is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday night.

Drake, entering her junior year at Linn-Mar, has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in theĀ 100-meter butterfly with an outstanding performance at the University of Iowa pool July 25.

Drake was timed in 1:01.17 in the preliminaries of the 100 fly that day, beating the qualifying standard for the U.S. Trials by two-hundredths of a second. The Trials will be held in Omaha this June in preparation for the 2016 Olympics in Brazil next August.

Lindwall wins Metro Spotlight Award

Frank Lindwall of Cedar Rapids Washington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday night.

Lindwall, entering his junior year at Washington, has already established himself as one of the top high school golfers in Iowa. He had an 18-hole average of 71.88 strokes last year as a sophomore, which was the second-best average in the state.

Lindwall made a strong showing at the U.S. Junior Amateur championships last month at the Colleton River Plantation Club in Bluffton, S.C. He shot rounds of 77 and 73 for a 36-hole total of 6-over-par 150 in an international field of elite golfers.
