Foreman wins Metro Spotlight Award

Will Foreman of Cedar Rapids Washington is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Foreman, a sophomore, has gotten off to a terrific start with the Washington wrestling team this season. He has a 7-0 record at 126 pounds with six pins and a 10-3 decision.

Foreman began the season Tuesday with victories against wrestlers from Marion and Mount Vernon in a double-dual, including a pin in 40 seconds against Marion. He collected two more pins in a double-dual against Waterloo East and Waterloo West Thursday, including another quick pin in 1:24 against Waterloo East.

Sellers wins Metro Spotlight Award

Lela Sellers of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Sellers, a 5-foot-11 senior, is one of the top basketball players in the state and has committed to play college ball at Liberty University, which is an NCAA Division I school.

Sellers had a big weekend for the Cougars in two victories over ranked teams. It began Friday night when she poured in 30 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a 65-61 victory at fifth-ranked Iowa City High.

Ollinger wins Metro Spotlight Award

Amanda Ollinger of Linn-Mar is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Ollinger, a 6-foot-1 senior, is one of the top basketball players in the state. She averaged 25 points in two games during the first week of the regular season and helped the 10th-ranked Lions get off to a 2-0 start.

Ollinger poured in 30 points against Waterloo East on Tuesday and followed that performance with 20 points and six steals against Muscatine on Saturday.

Kennedy gridders win Metro Spotlight

All of the members of the Cedar Rapids Kennedy football team have been named winners of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

The Cougars performed one of the most memorable rags-to-riches stories in  state history this year by compiling a 13-1 record and reaching the finals of the Class 4A playoffs, just a year after enduring a 3-8 campaign.

Kennedy jumped 10 games in the victory column and reached the 4A finals for the first time in school history. The Cougars bumped off Washington in the quarterfinals, beating the Warriors for the second time this year, and handed Bettendorf its only loss of the season in the semifinals.

Jenks wins Metro Spotlight Award

Stephanie Jenks of Linn-Mar is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Jenks, a senior, is the premier distance runner in Iowa and perhaps the best of all time.

Jenks won the Nike Cross Heartland regional cross country title in Sioux Falls, S.D., last Sunday in a field of 273 runners from seven states. She set a record on the 5K course at Yankton Trail Park in 17 minutes, 1.3 seconds and won the race by 10.8 seconds.
