Saints girls stay atop 2A soccer poll

Xavier is No. 1 in Class 2A and four Metro teams are ranked in Class 3A in this week's girls soccer poll released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Xavier has been ranked No. 1 all season.

Washington is ranked No. 5, Kennedy No. 8, Linn-Mar No. 10 and Jefferson No. 13 in the Class 3A poll.

Washington is playing No. 4 Iowa City West today at 6:30 p.m. at Kingston Stadium.

Ankeny is ranked No 1 in Class 3A and Union is No. 1 in Class 1A.

Xavier boys remain No. 1 in 2A soccer poll

Xavier again received all nine first-place votes and remains the No. 1 ranked Class 2A boys soccer team in the latest Iowa High School Soccer Association poll.

Xavier has been ranked No. 1 in every poll this season.

Marion slipped three spots to No. 12 in Class 2A after suffering its first loss of the season, a 1-0 shootout decision to Class 1A No. 2 Waterloo Columbus.

Washington is ranked No. 5 in Class 3A and Kennedy is No. 7. Linn-Mar dropped out of the rankings.

Girls regional soccer pairings released

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the pairings for the girls regional soccer tournaments Friday.

Class 2A teams start play May 26, Class 3A on June 1.

Xavier does not have to leave its campus in its bid to win its sixth straight state title. The Saints have a bye into the Class 2A regional semifinals on May 31, when it will host the winner of the Oskaloosa/South Tama quarterfinal game. Xavier will host the regional final June 6 at 5 p.m. Its opponent will be either Marion, Prairie or Clear Creek Amana. Prairie plays Clear Creek Amana in a quarterfinal game at Tiffin on May 26. The winner of that game plays at Marion on May 31. The Indians received a bye.

The four Metro Class 3A teams were assigned to two of the eight regions.  Jefferson and Kennedy are in Region 5, Washington and Linn-Mar in Region 6. Class 3A teams in those regions need win only two games to qualify for the state tournament.

Jefferson hosts Waterloo West at Kingston Stadium and Kennedy hosts Waterloo East in the regional semifinals June 1. The winners meet June 6 at Kingston at 5 p.m.

Linn-Mar hosts Dubuque Hempstead and Washington meets Dubuque Senior at Kingston Stadium in the semifinals June 1. The winners meet June 6 at Kingston at 7 p.m.

The state tournament is June 9-11 at Muscatine.

Xavier girls maintain top spot in poll

Lie it has been all season, Xavier once again was ranked No. 1 Thursday in the Class 2A soccer poll released by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Three Metro teams are ranked in the top 10 of the Class 3A poll. Kennedy, which knocked off then No. 1 Iowa City West Saturday, moved up one spot to No. 6. Washington, which handed Xavier its only loss of the season Saturday, stayed at No. 8. Linn-Mar fell one spot to No. 10.

Jefferson also is ranked in the 3A poll at No. 12, up one spot from last week.

Kennedy plays at Linn-Mar tonight (Thursday) and Jefferson battles Washington at Kingston Stadium. Kennedy plays at No. 1 Xavier tomorrow (Friday) at 4:15 p.m.

Marion boys continue climb in polls

The Marion boys soccer team continues to move up the poll, pulling in at No. 9 in this week's Iowa High School Soccer Coaches Association Class 2A rankings.

Marion (8-0) broke into the rankings two weeks ago at No. 15. The Indians moved up to 13 last week.

Xavier continues to lead the 2A poll. The Saints have been ranked No. 1 since the start of the season. They again received all nine first-place votes.

Washington held on to the No. 5 spot in Class 3A, but Kennedy slid two spots to No. 6. Linn-Mar fell three spots to No. 15.

Kennedy plays at Linn-Mar tonight (May 5) and the Cougars host Xavier Friday night (May 6). Washington hosts Jefferson tonight at Kingston Stadium.
