Xavier is host site for Metro tourney

Xavier is one of two host sites for the 48th annual Bob Vrbicek Metro Tournament, which kicks off the high school baseball season for the  Saints, the other six schools in the Cedar Rapids Metro and Mount Vernon.

Xavier Coach Bob Cataldo's team, which finished last season at  12-23-1, will host Marion at 7 p.m. on Monday, following the 5 p.m.  contest between Jefferson and Washington at Ken Charipar Field.

Prairie is the other host site. Coach Todd Rima's Hawks, the defending Class 4A state champions, face a tough opener against traditional power Kennedy at 7 p.m. following a 4:30 p.m. contest between Mount Vernon and Linn-Mar.

Semifinal and consolation round games are set for Tuesday. The championship and third-place games will be Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Stadium with the fifth and seventh-place games to be played at Xavier.

No. 2 Saints boot No. 2 Warriors in thriller

Xavier captain Luke Duball scored with 37 seconds left Tuesday as the  Saints trimmed the Washington Warriors, 2-1, in a battle of state soccer powers at Xavier.

Xavier (3-0) is ranked No. 2 in Class 2A and Washington (3-1) is  ranked No. 2 in Class 3A.

The Warriors took an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Brooks Papendick. Duball, who switched to forward, countered with eight minutes left in  the first half to forge a 1-1 tie.

Xavier goalkeeper Owen McCarron stopped a one-on-one opportunity by  Washington with about two minutes left in the game.

The Saints quickly countered and got the ball to Duball, who eluded  two Washington defenders and fired a rocket into the upper-left corner  of the goal for the victory.

No. 6 Xavier girls roll by Warriors

Tom Lilly knows exactly how many times the Xavier girls basketball  team had whipped the Washington Warriors by 31 points over the years.

"Zero," he said.

That was before Friday night, however.

The Saints got off to fast starts in both halves and dunked the  Warriors, 59-28, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Ron  Thillen Gymnasium.

"Wash has been a tremendous program and very well coached," said  Lilly. "They've been sort of our nemesis."

Not this time.

Lilly has battled Washington for the past 32 years as a head coach,  including 13 years at Regis and the past 19 years at Xavier.

He's had his share of victories against the Warriors along the way,  but nothing like this one.

The Saints, who are ranked No. 6 in Class 4A, began the game with a  13-0 run and started the second half with an 18-2 spurt, way too much  for the visitors to overcome.

Washington (7-10, 4-6) scored only eight points in the second half,  with four points in the third quarter and four more in the fourth  period.
