Fullard is RBI machine for Eagles

Izaya Fullard has a dream assignment for the Kirkwood baseball team.

He bats third in the lineup behind Korry Howell and Taylor Jackson, a pair of premier table-setters for one of the best-hitting junior college teams in America.

"I've got Taylor and Korry hitting in front of me and they're doing a great job of getting on," Fullard said Monday. "Even if they only get singles, they're most likely going to end up on second and third (with stolen bases).

"It makes it a lot easier to put the ball in play and get RBIs."

Fullard, a freshman infielder from Iowa City West, enjoyed another productive day at the ballpark as the seventh-ranked Eagles split an ICCAC conference doubleheader against Iowa Central at the new Mount Mercy ballpark.

Kirkwood won the first game, 12-5, but dropped the nightcap, 9-8.

Fullard went 4-for-9 in the doubleheader and drove in two runs, giving him 39 RBIs in 25 games. That's an average of 1.56 RBIs per game and ranks seventh in NJCAA Division II baseball.

Jackson helps No. 7 Eagles sweep IC

Taylor Jackson and Giancarlo Stanton have something in common now as  baseball sluggers.

That's very good news for the Kirkwood Eagles.

Jackson belted two home runs Friday in his first game for the Eagles  at Kirkwood field, including a walk-off shot in the bottom of the  seventh inning to give the seventh-ranked Eagles a 6-5 victory over  Iowa Central in the opener of their conference doubleheader.

Kirkwood won the second game, 8-1, to sweep the ICCAC twinbill and put  the Eagles all alone in first place.

Jackson's performance came a day after Stanton crushed two homers in  his first game for the New York Yankees in a victory over Toronto,  although the resemblance ends there.

Stanton is a big man who led the Major Leagues with 59 home runs last  season, so his round-trippers are not a great surprise. Jackson, by  contrast, is 5-foot-10 and 160 pounds, but it's pure muscle.

Powell paces KCC golfers at TPC

SILVIS, Ill. - Niall Powell of Kirkwood tied for 15th at the TPC Deere  Run Invitational Saturday at 4-over-par 146.

The Eagles finished in 14th place in an elite field of 23 collegiate teams.

Powell shot consecutive rounds of 73 and 73 at the two-day tournament  in adverse weather conditions.

KCC softball splits at Indian Hills

OTTUMWA - The Kirkwood softball team split a non-conference  doubleheader at Indian Hills Friday.

The Eagles won the first game, 2-1, behind a strong pitching  performance by DoniRae Mayhew. Indian Hills took the nightcap, 10-2,  in five innings.

Mayhew did not allow any earned runs in the 2-1 victory. She struck  out six batters and walked three.

Monika Bevans hit a solo home run for Kirkwood in the opener. Lauren  Kuch went 3-for-4 and Skylar Ryan collected an RBI.

Mayhew belted a two-run homer for the Eagles in the second game for  all their scoring.
