Marion hands J-Hawk boys 1st loss

PDF

Jefferson's second trip to Marion in as many nights didn't go quite as well as its first one.

The J-Hawks ended a nine-season drought against Linn-Mar on Friday night, but couldn't solve Marion's mighty mites on Saturday.

Marion handed the J-Hawks their first loss of the season, 61-47, in a non-conference boys basketball game at Marion High School.

“We’re not the biggest, but they’re smart,” Marion Coach Mike Manderscheid said after the Indians posted their second win in as many nights. Marion beat Benton on Friday night at home.

“We played our butts off,” Manderscheid said after the game.

Before the game, Manderscheid said he wanted to make sure Marion played physical and he wanted to concentrate on the fundamentals for his team to perform well. The Indians did that in many ways -- offensively and defensively -- pretty much throughout the contest.

Ty Gunderson and Brandon Landuyt paced the Indians with 17 and 14 points, respectively.  Balance was a key. Isaac Frazier added 10 points and Craig Engle had nine on three impressive and needed long bombs from 3-point land. Quinn Cannoy played a great floor game and finished with seven points.

Manderscheid was happy with the number of assists and definitely emphasized the team’s “unselfish play” and he told his troops to play with that type of passing ability and see what happens at the end.

“We pushed the ball well up the court and we have some good shooters,” which he also referred to as “zone busters.”  Both teams limited their turnovers to an unofficial total of 10 each.

Jacob Olson led Jefferson with 17 points, scoring 12 of Jefferson’s first 21 points. He was responsible for 14 of their first 25 points of the opening half.  Ky Kramer, who converted six of eight free throws, finished with 12 points.

Holding a 45-43 lead, Marion went on a 16-0 run in the second half that clinched the victory.

Jefferson scored only five field goals in the second half.
