Oglesby, Washpun shoot down East

PDF

WATERLOO -- The Waterloo East boys' basketball team did everything in its power Monday night, but Cedar Rapids Washington presented too many matchup problems and beat the Trojans, 64-44, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.

Josh Oglesby's height and athleticism caused the Trojans problems and he went off, scoring 29 points and draining five 3-pointers. Wes Washpun was 9-of-13 from the field and scored 18 points for the Warriors (11-6, 8-4 MVC).

On the defensive end, Washpun shut the Trojans (1-16, 0-12) down, skying to block shots, disrupting passing lanes with his long and active arms, and doing it all from the point guard position.

"He (Oglesby) pretty much did whatever he wanted to do tonight," East Coach Anthony Thomas said. "We did not make it difficult for him. We didn't get any pressure on him at all."

Oglesby, a pure shooter with frenetic energy on the court, did a little bit of everything: pull-up jumpers, deep 3-pointers and a dunk.

"I thought we played good as a team tonight," said Oglesby. "We just executed. It wasn't a perfect game but we ran our sets well and executed enough."

"You're surprised when he misses a shot," said Washington Coach Brad Metzger. "He's making upper-level reads on his screens, which messes with the defense. They never really know what he's going to do."

Oglesby was 11-of-24 from the field, playing part of the game against a box-and-1 defense that focused solely on him.

The Trojans on the other hand, did a lot of chasing on the defensive end and couldn't catch up after falling behind 22-10 after the first quarter.

Washington won the sophomore game, 60-46.
