No.8 Wash girls roll by Wahlert

The eighth-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington girls basketball team enjoyed its own gymnasium and put on a stellar show Tuesday night with a 76-45 victory over Dubuque Wahlert in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.

The Warriors utilized the continuous clock for a good share of the second half.

“Our game plan was to apply a great deal of pressure, try and speed up the game on Wahlert and be effective as rebounders,” said Washington Coach Frank Howell.

Mission accomplished.

The Warriors (13-3, 7-2) had many players figure in the victory. Senior Abby Herb and junior Dani Franklin tallied 16 points apiece. Aleena Hobbs was impressive with long-range shooting and finished with 11 points.

Herb doubles as one of the state’s best shot-blockers in Class 5A and Franklin averages nine rebounds a game, which is fourth-best in Iowa in the large school class. Both girls didn’t do any harm in keeping those impressive statistics alive.

As sure as the noteworthy red sweater worn by Howell all the way from his days at Audubon High School through his equally impressive tenure at Washington, the Warriors' well-known relentless press caused havoc for the Golden Eagles. Washington grabbed a 30-12 lead after one quarter.

Excellent shooting, highlighted by five 3-point goals in the first half, propelled Washington to a 45-23 halftime lead.

Even the 13 points by Logan Lynch and 10 by Marissa Cody were not enough to close the gap for Wahlert (4-10, 1-8). The continuous clock was in motion from late in the third quarter through game’s end.

Howell didn’t bring up anyone’s name individually in this contest and emphasized, “We have shown a great team effort recently.” This was evident with 10 players scoring for Washington.

The Warriors travel to Linn-Mar Friday night.
