Prairie wrestlers hope to get healthy

PDF

The most important members of the Cedar Rapids Prairie wrestling squad these days could be the trainer, the physical therapist and the team doctor.

The Hawks are hurting a little bit and the biggest meets of the season are coming up.

Sam Uthoff, Dylan Becker and Austin Gould did not wrestle during Thursday night's double-dual meet at Prairie and only Uthoff is given a chance of competing in the Mississippi Valley Conference meet this Saturday.

The Class 3A district meet is scheduled for Feb. 9, and if you don't wrestle at the district meet you cannot qualify for the state meet. The clock is ticking.

Prairie is ranked No.2 by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association and No.5 by The Predicament, so there's a lot at stake.

"There's not much you can worry about or anything," said Prairie Coach Blake Williams. "You just have to worry about the guys we have out there right now.

"Hopefully they can come back," he said. "Most of those guys are seniors. I'm sure if there's any chance they can come back, they will."

Even in their weakened condition, the Hawks were much too strong for their MVC rivals Thursday night. They blasted Waterloo East 77-3 and took care of Washington, 69-7.

Washington topped Waterloo East, 55-24, in the first meet of the night.

Uthoff, who is ranked No.5 at 106 pounds, was not feeling well Thursday. "A little under the weather," said Williams. "He stayed home from school and hopefully he'll be ready to go Saturday."

Becker, the regular at 132 pounds, has an injured hand and possible ligament damage. Williams said he will not wrestle in the MVC meet Saturday at Washington High School.

"We'll see how it is and hopefully he'll have a chance to go at the end (of the season)," the coach said.

Gould, ranked No.6 at 182 pounds, has a shoulder injury.

"He won't be ready by Saturday, and at this point I don't think we need to risk anything," said Williams. "We'll try to wait as long as we can and hopefully he'll have a chance."

Cam Rathje, ranked No.5 at 170 pounds, has missed action this season, but was back in the lineup Thursday night.

The featured match Thursday came at 285 pounds and saw eighth-ranked Andrew Netolicky of Prairie nudge third-ranked Zac Gillis of Washington, 1-0.

Gillis deliberately let Netolicky escape with 1:26 left in the match, but never got the takedown he needed for the victory as Netolicky fought him off.

Netolicky was surprised Gillis gave him the one-point escape. "I thought he'd try to ride me out and send it to overtime," he said.

"I feel pretty confident on my feet this year," said Netolicky. "I tried to stay farther away from him and make him make a mistake and capitalize on it.

"I thought I should have moved some more, but I figure we'll probably wrestle again."

River Whitters collected two pins for Prairie at 160 pounds, sticking his opponent in 46 seconds in both matches.

Trey Schuler and Dax Dills went 2-0 in the meet for Washington. Dills recorded a pin and a major decision, while Schuler had a pin and a regular decision.

Williams is looking forward to Saturday's conference meet, which could be a tussle among Prairie, Linn-Mar and Iowa City West.

"If 14 guys wrestle the way they're supposed to, then I'd say we could be in the mix," he said. "We have a lot of work to do before that happens. We'll see."
