Surging Warriors knock off J-Hawks

Cedar Rapids Jefferson junior Jacob Olson torched Washington for a career-high 31 points in a 57-36 victory when the two clubs met back in December.

The Warriors remembered that painful encounter and did something about it Friday night.

Washington pestered Olson all night in the rematch at Jefferson and defeated the J-Hawks, 50-40, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game for its fourth straight victory.

The Warriors (5-14, 5-9) held Olson to 10 points and made him work extremely hard for all 10.

"We knew we had to shut him down," said Austin Bergstrom, who led the defensive effort against Olson. "We had to make sure we locked him down and not let him get going like he did."

Bergstrom missed the first game against Jefferson after he accidentally closed his car door on his hand, ripping off a fingernail and knocking him out of action. Washington Coach Adam Sanchez was glad to have Bergstrom for Round 2 against the J-Hawks.

"He's our best defensive player. A great soccer player," said Sanchez. "His feet are amazing. That was the big difference tonight, having him on the floor."

Olson was averaging 18 points earlier this season, but he's become a marked man and defenses are being designed to stop him. The Warriors seemed to have two men in his face wherever he went Friday.

"I can't really breathe," he said. "I can't really go anywhere, and everywhere I go there's always a defender."

Bergstrom learned a few things about trying to guard Olson by watching the first encounter from the bench with his injury. He's also learned a few things about car doors.

"I was coming home from piano (practice)," he explained. "I got out of the car and I shut the door on my finger. I was trying to reach in and grab something.

"I learned that the door is going to shut, so put your arm in further so it doesn't get your finger. I missed a couple of weeks."

Sanchez said the defensive game plan Friday was pretty obvious after the way Olson played against them the first time.

"We looked at the scoresheet from the last time we played them and saw 32 on there or whatever it was," he said. "We realized he's a big piece of their puzzle.

"He gets guys involved and the ball has to be in his hands for them to be real successful. I thought we did a good job. We learned he's a really good player and we've got to have two guys on him and at least four eyes on him at all times."

Jefferson (9-10, 6-8) needs Olson, Ky Kramer and Creighton Robinson to be functioning at a high level to be successful and it didn't happen against the Warriors. They combined for just 23 points and the J-Hawks never got rolling.

"We didn't make the adjustments we should have. We dug too big of a hole," said Jefferson Coach Stu Ordman, who has become accustomed to seeing opponents focus on Olson.

"I think they give him a lot of attention. We have to make adjustments so we can get him open in other ways and get other people involved."

Olson led the J-Hawks with his 10 points. Bergstrom matched that total for Washington.

The Warriors have raised their record from 1-14 to a much more respectable 5-14 with their four-game winning streak coming down the stretch. Their confidence level keeps rising with each victory.

"It's really high right now," said Bergstrom. "We're feeling good."

Washington opened a 14-point lead at 46-32 with five minutes left in the game. Jefferson pulled within 46-40 with an 8-0 run with 2 1/2 minutes left, but the J-Hawks did not score again.

Jefferson played without Layne Sullivan, who missed the game with a sprained ankle.
