Prairie wins Hawkins Relays

Marion High School senior Zach Borens grew up in Wisconsin and had his heart set on playing football for the Badgers some day, but he's gotten over it now.

Wisconsin offered the 6-foot-8, 330-pound offensive lineman a chance to join the team as a preferred walk-on, the same offer he got from Iowa and Iowa State, but then Indiana State came along and offered him a full ride to play for them.

For awhile, he was tempted by that invitation from Wisconsin.

"I did consider it, and then Indiana State came along," Borens said Tuesday. "It was still up in the air, but then I went to visit Indiana State and I loved it there, just as much as I loved Wisconsin."

He said good-bye to the Badgers and hello to the Sycamores.

"It's not a big disappointment," he said. "I'm over it now."

Borens does more than play football for the Marion Indians. He's also one of the top shot putters in the state and showed it Tuesday by claiming his speciality at the 48th Annual Hawkins Relays at Prairie High School.

Borens won the shot put with a heave of 52 feet, 4 inches, matching his season high and only five inches shy of his personal best, set last year when he placed fifth in the Class 3A shot put at the state meet with a toss of 52-9.

Borens has qualified for the Drake Relays for the first time in his career and is looking forward to competing in Des Moines in two weeks.

"I'm very excited. It's very cool," he said. "It's fun to be going."

Prairie won the team championship at its own meet Tuesday, even though the Linn-Mar Lions broke three meet records and won six events.

The Hawks finished with 116.5 points to edge Linn-Mar (113) and Marion (103) in the six-team standings.

Linn-Mar junior Josh Evans nipped Jefferson senior Timauntay Jones in the 800 meter run in 1:56.82 to break one of the meet records. Jones, who placed second in 1:57.70, held the old mark of 1:56.90 set last year.

Linn-Mar established new marks in the 4x800 relay and 4x100 relay. Mike Keiser won the 110 hurdles, Perrion Scott claimed the 200 meter dash and the Lions also took the shuttle hurdle relay.

Isaiah Vlasek won the 3200 meter run for Prairie and the Hawks took the sprint medley.

Jones claimed the 400 meter dash for Jefferson and Lucas Vanous won the 400 low hurdles for the J-Hawks.

Nick Steingreaber clocked a swift 10.73 in the 100 meter dash to narrowly miss a record. Craig Murtha won the discus for the Saints.

Marion won the 4x400 relay.
