Oglesby, Washpun combine for 42 in win

DUBUQUE – Cedar Rapids Washington wants to make another northbound trip on U.S. 151 in 10 days.

The Warriors hope Tuesday was a preview of things to come in Class 4A Substate 4.

Washington leaned on its one-two punch of Josh Oglesby and Wes Washpun to edge Dubuque Senior, 55-50, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Nora Gymnasium.

Oglesby and Washpun combined for 42 of Washington’s 55 points.

If it gets by Clinton on Monday in the first round of substate play, Washington (13-8) would return to Nora Gymnasium on Feb. 25 for a rematch with Senior.

The Rams (9-10), the substate’s No. 2 seed, have a first-round bye.

Washington Coach Brad Metzger doesn’t think the teams will see anything new from each other if a rematch does occur.

“It’s not like (Senior) hasn’t had the chance to figure out some of the things we do,” Metzger said. “We have also had the chance to figure out some of the things they do. There isn’t going to be any surprises.

“There’s some things we have to work on (before substate).”

After a halftime tie, Washington began to generate offense off of its defense in the third quarter. The Warriors switched to a zone defense and started pressuring Senior at halfcourt. The result was more steals and transition opportunities for Washington.

Washpun recorded five steals in the game, and none were as memorable as his halfcourt steal that turned into a one-hand dunk midway through the third quarter.

The slam gave Washington a 33-32 lead with two minutes left in the third quarter. The Warriors never trailed again.

“Wes is a hard guy to deal with up top,” Metzger said. “He’s got long arms and great anticipation skills. That’s been valuable for us all year.”

Washpun said the switch on defense gave a boost to the Warriors.

“We got some quick, easy buckets, and that’s what I think got us some momentum,” Washpun said. “We kept things pretty basic. I think this gives us confidence the next time we come up here.”

Oglesby’s eight points in the fourth quarter helped seal the win for Washington, which was coming off a 45-41 triumph over No. 6 Sioux City East on Saturday in Des Moines.

Sophomore Josh Weeber scored a game-high 26 points for the Rams, the only player on his squad to reach double figures.

Metzger hopes his team can clamp down on Weeber if the two teams meet again.

“He did a great job tonight. He’s a great player,” Metzger said.
