Snappers stun Kernels in 9th

BELOIT, Wis. - Chad Lewis laced a two-run double to deep left field in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday night to give Beloit a 3-2 victory over Cedar Rapids in a Midwest League game before 585 fans in Beloit.

The Kernels carried a 2-1 lead into the inning, but reliever Manuel Soliman walked Rashun Dixon and John Wooten hit a double before Lewis delivered the game-winner with one out.

Soliman (1-1) pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out two and walking two.

Tyler Duffey started for the Kernels and went seven innings. He allowed one run on four hits.

Duffey struck out seven batters and did not walk anyone. He pitched at least seven innings for the fifth time in six starts this season.

The Kernels took their first lead in the top of the ninth inning when Travis Harrison's RBI double to center plated Jorge Polanco, putting Cedar Rapids ahead 2-1.

Polanco singled to begin the inning and was bunted to second base by Dalton Hicks. Harrison's double was his second two-bagger of the day.

Dixon's solo home run to right-center in the second put Beloit up 1-0. It was Dixon's fourth homer in nine games with the Snappers and the only extra-base hit that Duffey allowed.

The Kernels quickly tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the third on Niko Goodrum's RBI single up the middle. It scored J.D. Williams, who had singled and went to second on a balk by Beloit starter Michael Ynoa.

Williams had two hits.

Ynoa went four innings for the Snappers, allowing one run on three hits while punching out seven and walking none. Ryan Dull (1-1) went one inning in relief for the victory.

The Kernels (23-10) and Snappers (19-14) meet again Sunday at 2 p.m. Jose Berrios (3-0, 2.55) is scheduled to pitch for the Kernels.
