Kernels win wild slugfest, 23-16

BELOIT, Wis. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Beloit Snappers rounded the bases all day Sunday, and when the power surge ended the Kernels had a wild 23-16 victory before 784 fans at Pohlman Field.

The Kernels and Snappers combined for 39 runs on 37 hits as every position player scored and collected a hit for both teams.

Cedar Rapids built an imposing 22-3 lead in the sixth inning before Beloit snapped away at their heels and made it more interesting.

Every Kernels position player drove in at least one run. Adam Brett Walker and Byron Buxton both had four hits and four runs scored.

Walker belted two homers and drove in seven runs for the second time this season. Buxton had four runs batted in. The duo combined to score or drive in 19 of the Kernels' 23 runs.

Walker is hitting .321 with nine homers and 40 RBIs in 34 games.

The Kernels set season-highs in runs (23), hits (19) and extra-base hits (11). Every Kernels position player had knocked in at least one run by the third inning.

Both teams sent at least nine batters to the plate in an individual inning twice.

The Kernels (24-10) started the offensive outburst in the first inning as nine men batted and six crossed the plate. The first five hitters reached base before an out was recorded. Tyler Grimes capped off the inning with two-run home run to center field.

The Kernels sent 11 batters to the plate in the third inning and scored eight runs on five hits to blow the game open, 14-2.

The Kernels extended the lead to 17-3 in the fourth inning when Buxton drove in both Grimes and Williams with an RBI triple. The Kernels jumped ahead 22-3 in the sixth inning as five more runs came home.

Beloit did not go down quietly as the Snappers scored 13 runs over the final four innings.

Jose Berrios started for Cedar Rapids and allowed three runs in four innings.

The Kernels and Snappers meet in the rubber game of the series Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Cedar Rapids opens a seven-game homestand Tuesday night against Burlington.
