Jeff girls smash state record in 4x200

DES MOINES - Maliya Rattliffe, Lucy Schneekloth, Jasmine Blue and Rachel "Bronco" Broghammer have been chasing the Jefferson school record in the 4x200 relay all spring.

They finally got it Friday and quite a bit more.

The Jefferson quartet shattered the all-time state record in the 4x200 when they blazed to victory in 1 minute, 40.94 seconds at the Class 4A state meet at Drake Stadium.

The J-Hawks splintered the old state mark of 1:41.0 set 38 years ago by Woodbine High School with the great Debbie Esser in 1975.

It took awhile for the J-Hawks to realize what they'd accomplished Friday.

Broghammer, ecstatic with her second state title in the 4x200 in three years, did not hear the announcement about the all-time record and wondered what a reporter was talking about.

"What!?!," she exclaimed when told the news. "OH MY GOD!"

Schneekloth heard the announcement about the state record and then put 2-and-2 together: Yup, they must have broken the school record as well.

That made her happy, because her mother - Julie Davis Schneekloth - helped set the school mark during her state championship days in the 1980s and had encouraged her daughter and friends to break it.

"I knew we could do this," said Ratliffe, one of two seniors on the relay. "There wasn't any doubt in my mind whatsoever."

Ratliffe, Broghammer, Taylor Jacobson and Summer Carber won the state title in the 4x200 relay in 2011. Now Rattliffe and Broghammer have struck again as 12th graders.

"I knew we were destined for greatness," said Broghammer. "We worked so hard."

The J-Hawks posed for pictures in the infield at Drake Stadium, happily obliging a string of newspaper, website and television folks, then happily posed some more for family and friends in a far corner of the track.

"I'm very proud of the kids," beamed Jefferson Coach Bill Calloway, one of the picture-takers. "I've coached for a long time, boys and girls. This is the hardest-working bunch of sprinters I've ever had."

Calloway has been a track coach for 37 years, including the last 27 as a head coach at Jefferson, and he ranked Friday's accomplishment as one of the best of his successful career.

"This is obviously way, way up there," he said. "This is an all-time best. Unreal. It's quite a moment for us."

They love their relays at Jefferson, moreso than individual events.

"You don't just win by yourself, you win with three other girls who are working just as hard as you are," Rattliffe explained. "That's the best part of it.

"After all the work, I get to look at three of my best friends. We did this together," she said, smiling at her teammates. "And I know for the rest of our lives we're going to be bound together over this."

Rattliffe got the 4x200 started with a swift leg out of the blocks. Schneekloth ran a strong second leg and gave the baton to Blue, just a freshman.

Blue gave the stick to Broghammer in good shape and "Bronco" (as she's called by Calloway) had a fiercely determined look coming down the straightaway.

"We did it!" she said.

The J-Hawks work endlessly on their handoffs and it paid off Friday with perfect exchanges and a perfect race.

By the way, the girls knew exactly what Calloway would tell them after the race. In fact, they laughed about it. Broghammer knows the script by heart after four years on the team.

"His exact words will be: 'Great job, girls. You have three more races to go. Get ready,'" she said. "He'll be very happy, though.

"He's pushed us and helped every one of us individually. As hard as we've worked, he's worked just as hard. It was a great win for everybody."

Broghammer was simply glad the race took place without incident. "Before the race," she confided, "I almost threw up multiple times."

Calloway said all four of his sprinters can run the 100-meter dash in 12.1 seconds, giving the J-Hawks the speed for a record-setting 4x200 relay.

"I think we surprised some people," he said.

Jefferson's victory in the relay lifted them into fifth place in the Class 4A standings with 22 points heading into the third and final day of the state meet on Saturday.

Jacobson did not contribute to a state title in the 4x200 this time, but the senior made a big contribution to the J-Hawks Friday by placing second in the 400 meter low hurdles in 1 minute, 4.24 seconds.

Metro girls claimed three of the top spots in the shot put. Lannie Nietert of Linn-Mar placed fourth at 38-10.75, Natalie Rumer of Prairie was fifth at 38-3 and Allyson Ballinger of Kennedy took seventh at 36-9.25.

Linn-Mar finished fifth in the distance medley with Lauren Dalecky, Halley Morgan, Maddie Saville and Amber Decker clocked in 4:09.66. The Lions are in sixth place in the team standings with 19 points.

Halle Lueck of Prairie placed sixth in the long jump at 16 feet, 8.75 inches.

Cedar Rapids Washington finished sixth in the 4x200 relay with Jasmine Raue, Jasmyne Jones, Megan Muller and Kadejah Sanders timed in 1:44.58.

Prairie is 14th in the team standings with eight points. Washington and Kennedy are tied for 24th with three points.

Pleasant Valley leads the Class 4A girls standings with 55 points. Waukee is second with 42 points.
