Furnish wins Iowa Women's Amateur

MASON CITY - Megan Furnish shot a final round 76 Wednesday to capture the 2013 Iowa Women’s Amateur Championship at Mason City Country Club.

Furnish, who came into the final round tied with Jenny Graeser, finished with a total of 13-over-par 229, good enough for a two shot win over Alex Zenor of Cedar Rapids.  Zenor shot a final round best 74 to jump into second place.

Furnish is a Cedar Rapids Jefferson grad and Zenor graduated from Kennedy.

Furnish, who will be a sophomore at Missouri State, got off to a rough start in round three. She made a double bogey on the first hole but came right back with a birdie at two. She then played very steady the rest of the way, making a few key up-and-downs for par on 15, 16 and 17 to maintain her cushion coming down the stretch.

Two-time champion Graeser, of Cedar Falls, struggled to an 83 in the final round.  Amanda Braun, also of Cedar Falls, joined Graeser and Furnish in the final grouping.  She posted a final round 80 to finish third at 234.

Kelly Nelson of Waterloo was the low scorer in the Open Division.  Nelson posted rounds of 75-82-79 to finish six shots clear of Robin Webb of Clive.  Nikki Lamb of Greenfield was the low scorer in the Open Division Second Flight after three straight rounds of 90.

The Open Division played Mason City Country Club at approximately 5,200 yards while the Championship Division played at about 5,800 yards.
