Lala notches 1st win for Hawkeyes

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Junior Patrick Lala, a former Marion prep, pitched 2-1/3 scoreless innings of relief and was the winning pitcher Sunday in Iowa's 3-2 win over Georgia State played at the Mississippi State stadium.

Iowa starter Matt Dermody pitched six innings of no-hit ball before surrendering a lead-off single in the seventh. He gave up a two-out, two-run single that tied the game, 2-2. Lala came on and got the last out, then pitched the final two innings, allowing two hits, walking two and striking out two.

Iowa won the game on Kurt Lee's RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.

Lala is in his first year at Iowa. He transferred from Kirkwood where he played for two seasons. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 29th round of last June's draft, but chose to attend Iowa.

Iowa's next game is Friday at Texas Tech.
