Busy Camacho coaches boys and girls at Xavier

Whoever invented the 24-hour day wasn't thinking kindly of Russ Camacho, who might be the busiest coach in town.

Camacho coaches five teams and more than 200 student-athletes at Cedar Rapids Xavier High School.

He's the head coach for the sophomore football team (about 40 players), the head coach for boys bowling and girls bowling (about 40 athletes) and the head coach for boys track and girls track (about 125 people).

He teaches general science and chemistry at Xavier, makes the round trip every day from his home in North Liberty and has two young sons.

No, 24 hours are not enough some days. Thirty hours might be better. "That would be nice," he said this week.

How does he find the time for everything? "That's a good question," he remarked. "There's not enough, sometimes."

Camacho was not complaining, mind you. He was just answering questions while keeping an eye on his 20-month-old son in the Xavier gym and trying to get both track teams ready for practice.

"Really busy," he said.

Camacho is the only head track coach in the Mississippi Valley Conference who's running boys and girls varsity teams. He added the girls team to his menu this season, succeeding Kevin Herdegen, now at Pella Christian.

He's been a boys track coach for nearly 12 years but has only limited experience with girls track, where the events and workouts can be different.

"It's a learning curve for me as well," he said. Everything seems to be on course, he added. "I'm really happy with how everything is going right now."

One of his top performers on the girls team is Alex Bartz, who leaped 5 feet, 4 inches in the high jump last year and already has a 5-foot-2 effort in the books this year indoors. "I think 5-6 for her is pretty realistic," said Camacho.

Tyler Sampson, Alex Saxen, Rachel Sigmon, Erin Marks and Kim Leskovec all ran on relays at the Class 4A state track meet last year, and Sampson was on the 4x200 relay that placed eighth.

Camacho said Xavier has a promising group of freshman sprinters with "pretty legitimate talent" this year.
