IOWA CITY -- Linn-Mar freshman Josh Evans is 5-foot-5 and 105 pounds of talent and determination.

"I didn't know he was that heavy!" Linn-Mar Coach Ken Hopkins said Tuesday with a hearty laugh.

He ain't heavy, but he can run.

Evans captured the 3200-meter run at the Hollingsworth Relays in 9:59.51 to beat Isaac Jensen of Iowa City West by four seconds in a good race at the Iowa City West track.

"It was hard," Evans said. "The wind was a little tough."

Evans is only 15 years old and barely shaving -- "A little bit," he claimed -- but he's already making his mark on the track scene this year. He ran a 9:47.00 on a 300-meter track at an indoor meet in Ames last month and is just 12 seconds away from matching the Linn-Mar school record of 9 minutes, 35 seconds.

Remember, he's just a freshman.

Hopkins said Evans was hampered during the early part of the cross country season last fall with a stress fracture, but nearly cracked the varsity lineup by the end of the campaign.

"I knew he was talented and I think he's going to get better," Hopkins declared.

Hopkins said he was surprised when Evans ran his 9:47.00 indoors, considering it was a 300-meter track and so early in the season, but is not surprised by his success.

"I think that qualified him for Drake (the Drake Relays)," Hopkins said. "And if it qualified him for Drake, I think if he gets in the flow with those fast guys, he'll just get sucked up in that jetstream and he'll run faster. I think he'll break the school record at Drake."

Dave Gott set the Linn-Mar mark of 9 minutes, 35 seconds in the 3200 in 2004.

Evans hopes to qualify for the Drake Relays and the Class 4A state track meet in the 3200 this season, and he'd also like to break the school mark this year. His long-range goals are bigger.

"Maybe a state title later on," he said modestly. "But this is a good class of freshmen. There are a lot of good runners."

Evans helped Linn-Mar finish second in the eight-team meet with 106 points. Iowa City West won the title with 132 points. Kennedy finished fourth (67.5 points), Xavier was fifth (54.5) and Prairie placed sixth (53.5).

Linn-Mar senior Kyle Dunn set a meet record in the 400 hurdles in 52.67 seconds and sparked the 4x400 relay to victory with a strong anchor. Dunn did not compete in the Ask Relays last Friday due to minor stiffness and soreness, but said he's fine now.

Dunn is the defending state champion in the 400 hurdles and 400 dash. This was the first time he's run the 400 hurdles this season and he won by more than 3 1/2 seconds ahead of teammate Nick Lucas.

Dunn did not seem satisfied when he crossed the finish line and glanced at the scoreboard clock. "It wasn't my best race, by any means," he remarked, but otherwise said he was pleased.

Brandon Ophoff won the 110 hurdles for Linn-Mar in 14.91 seconds and ran on the victorious sprint medley with Michael Detert, Aaron Hunter and Tanner Rathje. Lucas, Jordan Kremer and Jabez Walker ran on the 4x400 with Dunn.

Chase Grabau won the 800 for the Lions in 2:06.14.

Prairie won the 4x800 relay with a strong anchor by Matt Stocker, finishing the work that began with Justin Burns, Jordan Burns and Kyle Stocker in 8:09.36. Sam Joens of Prairie took the discus with a heave of 170 feet, 6 inches.

Xavier picked up victories by Alec Clasen in the high jump (6 feet) and by Brandon Gradoville in the 400 (52.92).

Iowa City West won the girls title in the Women of Troy Relays, which were held in conjunction with the boys' Hollingsworth Relays at the Iowa City West track.

Linn-Mar placed third in the women's division with 69 points. Carolyn Newhouse was a double winner for the Lions in the 3000 (10:44.99) and the 1500 (5:03.70). Amanda Piche captured the discus for Linn-Mar at 129 feet, 7 inches.
