Schnieders' comes up short in qualifying bid

WILLIAMSBURG -- Marion's Matt Schnieders failed in his bid to make the Class 3A boys state golf tournament Friday, shooting a 12-over par 83 in the district meet at Stone Creek Golf Course.

Schnieders had three bogeys and three double bogeys to go along with his only birdie on a tough front nine. He had four bogeys on the back.

Schnieders was Marion's only golfer to qualify for districts out of sectionals.

Joseph Harris and Alex Thode both shot 71s for low scores and led Washington, Iowa, to the team title with a 305. Williamsburg was second at 307.Fairfield was third at 322, but also qualified for the state tournament.

Mitch Tucker of Oskaloosa and Brad Klosterboer of Williamsburg both shot 73 to also advance in medal play.

The Class 3A state tournament is May 27-28 at Ames.
