Cougars flatten Warriors, Rams

Shane Williams and Zach Deitrich didn’t get to wrestle very much for Kennedy Thursday night (Dec. 9), but it was their own fault.

They pinned their guys too fast.

Williams stuck his two opponents in 2 minutes, 18 seconds and Deitrich flattened his guys in 2:50 as the Cougars swept a double-dual from Dubuque Senior and Washington at the Washington gym.

Kennedy whipped Senior, 60-18, and beat Washington, 53-21.

Williams, a junior 152-pounder, pinned Alex Mayne of Dubuque Senior in 1:14 and stuck Evan Lehrman of Washington in 1:04, barely breaking a sweat either time.

“It’s never easy,” said Williams, a two-time state qualifier. “I just have to prepare the same way.”

Deitrich, a senior 189-pounder, pinned Rob Blake of Dubuque Senior in 1:33 and stuck Dixon Griffith of Washington in 1:17, but his total elapsed time of 2:50 was 32 seconds slower than Williams in the battle for quickest pins.

“I guess I’ll have to work harder,” Deitrich said with a smile.

There were lots of smiles for Kennedy. Four Cougars collected two pins apiece, with Luke Kremer (135) and Ben Feuerhelm (130)  joining the fun.

Kennedy collected 10 pins, two technical falls and one major decision in the meets with a dominating performance.

“We stressed that this week, coming out and dominating and not just winning a match,” said Kennedy Coach Brent Paulson. “Not just winning, but dominating.”

Kennedy and Washington will serve as co-hosts of the Five Seasons Dual Team Tournament Saturday with the first round starting at 9:30 a.m. at both schools. The finals are scheduled for 4 p.m.

Two Dubuque Senior wrestlers, Chase Lynn (103) and Skyler Kelley (140), were injured during their meet against Washington and were transported by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center. A spokesperson at the medical center said she could not release information about their condition.

Washington beat Dubuque Senior in their meet.
