East routs Warriors in regional tourney

WATERLOO -- Washington managed only two hits and committed seven errors and was routed by Waterloo East, 11-1, Saturday night in a Class 4A first round regional tournament softball game at East.

The game was tied, 1-1, heading into the bottom of the third inning when East erupted for five runs. The Trojans added five more runs over the next two innings to finish the game off after five.

East (19-20) snapped an eight-game losing streak. The Trojans advance to play No. 7 Jefferson (31-7) Monday night at Cedar Rapids. The J-Hawks handed two of those losses to East last Thursday -- 2-1 in 10 innings and 6-1.

"I've never felt so good about a team that's coming off an eight-game losing streak," East Coach Gene Laughlin told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier. "This team in particular works so hard. We've got twice as much from them as we expected in the beginning of the year."

Alyson Netty struck out four for East. Ashley Kubik was 3-for-3 with three RBIs.

Kristen Peterson took the loss.
