Washington boys fall in 5 overtimes

PDF

DES MOINES - The Cedar Rapids Washington and Des Moines Roosevelt boys basketball teams played for a long, long time Saturday night before they could determine a winner.

Roosevelt out-lasted the Warriors, 95-87, in five overtimes in a game that lasted 52 minutes. That's 20 minutes longer than a normal high school game, 12 minutes longer than a college game and four minutes longer than an NBA game.

The marathon affair was tied, 52-52, after four quarters. Both teams scored five points in the first overtime, both teams scored eight points in the second overtime, both clubs scored six points in the third overtime and both teams had six points in the fourth overtime.

The score was still tied, 77-77, entering the fifth overtime when Roosevelt finally took command with an 18-10 advantage.

Hunter Strait finished with 31 points for Washington (5-8). Keion Wills popped in six 3-pointers and added 28 points for the Warriors, but nobody else reached double figures.

Laveechie Williams did not play for Washington. He was called for two technical fouls in a game against Jefferson Friday night and had to serve an automatic one-game suspension.

Wills, Noah Dawson, Dallas Hobbs and Ian Thomas all fouled out for Washington, further depleting the team. Gatdoar Kueth and Jeremiah Chandler fouled out for Roosevelt.

Kueth scored 25 points for Des Moines Roosevelt (7-6). Chandler scored 20 points, Eli Dotson had 14 points and Ethan Shafer added 12 points.
