PLYMOUTH, Ind. - Charlie Hartwig fired a 1-under-par 71 Tuesday to help the Kirkwood Eagles claim fourth place after the first round of the NJCAA Division II national tournament at the Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind.
The 72-hole tournament runs through Friday.
The South Mountain Cougars and Tyler Apaches are tied for first place in the 20-team field at 5-under 283 after 18 holes. Mississippi Gulf Coast is third at 291 with Kirkwood fourth at 295, 12 shots behind the leaders.
Marco Maldonado of Tyler tore up the 6,876-yard course Tuesday with an 8-under 64. Connor Klein of South Mountain shot a 4-under 68. Hartwig is tied for seventh at 71.
Carson Whittington shot an even-par 72 for Kirkwood. Eddie Doyle shot 75, Louis Flynn 77 and Jordan Even 79.
