INDEPENDENCE - Lukas Mees captured top honors at the Independence cross country meet Saturday and led the Marion Indians to first place in the team standings.

Mees won the 5K race in 16 minutes, 20 seconds. Marion won the championship with 47 points, followed by West Delaware with 82 points.

Cole Kuethe placed third for the Indians in 17:16, followed by Isaac Smith (8th in 17:47), Peter Rethwisch (13th in 18:06), Jordan Garthwaite (22nd in 18:42), Colton Forster (24th in 18:44) and Nick Meeks (46th in 19:49).

The Marion girls placed sixth in their race.
