Marion to induct 7 into Athletic Hall of Fame

Marion will induct seven people into its Athletic Hall of Fame during halftime of Friday night's homecoming football game against DeWitt Central.

The inductees include Coach Les Dollinger, athletes Jana Bradley Gibbs, Jordan Forkner and Rob McComas, and community members Anne Heim and Wayne and Janet Jackson.

Les Dollinger made a tremendous impact on Marion High School as a teacher, coach, activities director, and high school principal.

During his high school coaching career, Les served as a head varsity football coach for 13 years with his teams winning at a 78 percent rate.  His teams never once had a losing record.  He coached two teams to undefeated seasons including one at Marion in 1971.

Les also served as varsity baseball coach and assistant basketball coach at Marion. The baseball teams won two Wamac championships.  While at Marion, Les was named “Teacher of the Year” in 1970 and was inducted into the Iowa Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1978.  Les was also inducted into the Marion Education Hall of Fame in 2008.

Les served as the Marion high school activities director, administrative assistant, and high school principal from 1973-80.  In 1980, he became the superintendent at Mid-Prairie where he served until 1986.  He finished his career as superintendent at Hillsboro Community Schools in Illinois where he retired in 1994. Les currently resides in Monmouth, Ill., with his wife JoEllen.  They have two daughters, Diane and Barbara (both graduates of Marion High School) and five grandchildren.

Jana Bradley Gibbs began her Marion High School athletic career in the summer before her freshman year by earning First Team All-Wamac honors as the shortstop of the softball team. She went on to earn 17 varsity letters in the sports of softball, volleyball, basketball and track. Jana received numerous honors for all-conference and all-metro in all four sports and earned all-state recognition in softball all five years. She was First Team All-State in softball following her senior year.

Jana continued her athletic career as a four-year starter on a very successful Coe softball team where she earned all-conference and all-region honors. She also is listed in the Top 10 in several offensive categories in Coe’s all-time records book. Jana and her senior teammates finished their Coe careers in Raleigh, N.C., with the school’s first trip to the College World Series.

Jana received her Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration and Public Relations from Coe College in 2006. She went on to complete her Master of Business Administration in 2009 from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She is married to Jamie Gibbs.  They live with their son, Bodey in Berea, Ohio, where Jamie is the head wrestling coach at Baldwin-Wallace College.

Jordan Forkner participated in wrestling, football, and baseball while at Marion High School.

Jordan received Second Team All-State honors as a linebacker in 2002.  He was named the Most Valuable Player and captain of the 2002 football team.

Jordan was a First Team All-State catcher in baseball in 2003.  He holds the Marion record in baseball for most putouts in a career with 267 as a catcher.  He also was named to the 2003 Small School East High School All-Star Team.

In wrestling, Jordan qualified for the Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament in 2003 at 171 pounds.  He finished his high school wrestling career with more than 100 career wins.  He also was a captain of the wrestling team his senior year.

Jordan currently is attending Mount Mercy University studying Criminal Justice and interning at the Linn County Juvenile Detention Center.  Jordan and his wife Jennifer live in North Liberty and have a daughter, Ayla.

Rob McComas participated in football, baseball, track, and wrestling at Marion High School.

Rob was an All-Wamac football player his junior and senior years while becoming an All-Stater his senior year.  He was also named All-Metro his senior year while serving as a team captain.  Rob was selected for and competed in the 1988 Shrine Bowl football game.

As a wrestler, Rob earned All-Wamac and All-Metro honors his senior year.  He also qualified for the Iowa High School State Wrestling meet his senior year while serving as a team captain.

In baseball, Rob was the starting catcher from 8th-12th grade.  He lead the Cedar Rapids/Marion Metro area in batting average, RBIs, and home runs his sophomore through senior seasons.  For a period of time, he was Marion’s career home run record holder.  He earned All-Wamac, All-Metro Elite, and All-District honors his junior and senior seasons.

After high school, Rob was a four-year football letter winner at the University of Northern Iowa.  He started at nose guard for the UNI Panthers his junior year and on the defensive line his senior season.

Rob presently lives in Iowa City where he is a project manager for McComas Lacina Construction.  He is married to Ania and they have two children, Liam and Emmy.

Anne Heim has contributed a tremendous amount of time and effort into supporting the athletic programs at Marion High School.

Anne served countless hours for the Marion Athletic Booster Club.  She was the secretary of the booster club for 14 years, from 1994-2007.  She volunteered for Starry, FMI, Vernon, and MHS for various projects and concessions.

Anne was Consensus Team Member of the Space Study Committee at Marion in 1998 which resulted in the new addition to the high school, new gymnasium, and additions to Starry Elementary.  She also volunteered for a past Football and Track Improvement Project.

Anne has also participated in many other ways such as Parent Advisory Committees, Starry Room Parent, and Fundraising Projects.  She was the recipient of the State of Iowa’s Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1997. Anne also served as a substitute in the MISD over the years as a crossing guard, secretary, and classroom aide.

Anne is married to David Heim and they have three children (all graduates of Marion High School), Ashley, Taylor and Elliot.  They currently reside in Marion, Iowa where she works at Mount Mercy University.

Wayne and Janet Jackson have dedicated countless hours over the years into the athletic programs at Marion High School.  More affectionately known as Mr. and Mrs. J., they have impacted many students, teams, and activities.

Mr. J. taught in all of the different schools in the Marion Independent School District over a 35-year period and coached at both the middle and high school levels.  He has supervised athletic and activity events for more than 20 years for Marion High School and is still doing so today.  Mr. J was the Director of Marion City Playgrounds for 13 years.  He also was a Detasseling Crew Leader for 22 years hiring over 950 young people for his team.

Mrs. J. was employed as a secretary at Marion High School for 37 years.  She has done the scoreboard and other jobs at various Marion sporting events for 20 years and is still volunteering today.

Wayne and Janet reside in Marion where they have three married children (all graduates of Marion High School), nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

The Marion Athletic Hall of Fame was founded in 2001 and with the Class of 2011 includes 82 members.
