Cerveny thinks J-Hawks could 'sneak up' on folks

Virg Cerveny might as well sleep at the bowling alley.

He's the head coach of the boys and girls bowling teams at Cedar Rapids Jefferson, he's an assistant coach at Mount Mercy University and he bowls in a league himself.

This past weekend he bowled on Friday night, helped coach Mount Mercy at a tournament in Oshkosh, Wis., on Saturday and Sunday, then drove to Indiana on Monday to scout the team at Vincennes Junior College and watch former Jefferson star Dan Healy, who is a freshman at Vincennes.

"You've got to like it to be able to do that, I guess," he said.

He'll be busy again Tuesday when the J-Hawks open the season with a boy/girl doubleheader against Xavier at May City Bowl.

The Jefferson boys compiled a 7-4 record in Mississippi Valley Conference meets last season. Michael Kilts, who had the sixth-best average in the MVC at 212 last year, leads the J-Hawks into the new season.

"Michael Kilts is my main player," Cerveny said.

Austin Kluth, Will James, Zach Trcka and Dan Britton also return with experience. Trcka did not bowl last season, but has returned to the team this year as a senior.

Cerveny said nine or 10 boys are competing for spots on the varsity, and said he might rotate seven or eight guys in the lineup. Healy, James Bruce and Tory Youker graduated from last year's squad.

Cerveny likes his team's chances this sesaon. "We'll sneak up on people, I'll put it that way," he said.
