Anderson's season starts with a bang

Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior Kristian Anderson wore a big smile as he walked around the Coe Natatorium Tuesday night.

He'd just captured the 100-yard butterfly at the Cedar Rapids Metro Meet, beat Washington star Ian Ford and set a personal record. He had good reasons to be happy.

"Every P.R. (personal record), I guess I celebrate a little too much," he said.

Anderson was not gloating. Ford is one of the premier swimmers in Iowa, but Anderson knows the 100 butterfly is not Ford's best event. Nonetheless, he beat a premier swimmer who has a scholarship to swim at the University of South Dakota next year.

"It's a milestone, I guess," Anderson said. "He is a top swimmer in the state. His name is big. Obviously everybody knows who he is. I'm trying to make a name for myself, I guess."

Anderson won the 100 butterfly in 55.37 seconds. He also won the 100 backstroke in 57.82 seconds.

Anderson placed 17th in the 50 freestyle at the state meet last year as a junior and helped the J-Hawks finish 19th in the 400 freestyle relay, but he's made great strides since then.

He stopped running cross country this year at Jefferson and trained with the Iowa City Flyers Swim Club before joining the J-Hawks in practice this fall. "I never swam full-time before, so I figured 'Why not?' "

Anderson credits Megan Oesting, the head coach of the Iowa City Flyers, with helping him improve.

"A great leader and she knows what she's talking about," he said. "She helped me get to where I am today.

"I came back two weeks ago (to Jefferson) and my coaches looked at my stroke and said I'm a totally different swimmer. So obviously it did a lot for me."

Jefferson Coach Ryan York was unavailable for comment following the meet Tuesday night.

Anderson is looking for a strong finish to his prep career this season, especially in the 100 butterfly. "I'm going to place at state in that event right there," he said. "There's no doubt about that."

He also plans to specialize in the freestyle this year.

Anderson said he plans to swim in college. "A few offers. Nothing real big," he said. "I want to improve by the end of the year so I have quite a few offers."

No team scores were kept at Tuesday's meet. It was a modified event, with swimmers competing in grade-level competition instead of open competition, with freshmen vs. freshmen, sophomores vs. sophomores, juniors vs. juniors and seniors vs. seniors.

Washington, Linn-Mar, Kennedy and Jefferson competed in the meet.
