Burrell gets pin, but J-Hawks get win

Tyler Burrell has defeated a state heavyweight champion this season, but it did not count on his record.

He beat his brother, Brandon Burrell, who won the Class 3A state title in 2009 when he was a senior at Cedar Rapids Washington. Brandon Burrell is now a junior at Central College, where he's a member of the wrestling and football teams.

"I have a great time with my brother. We wrestle around all the time," Tyler Burrell said Thursday night. "He came back a couple of weekends ago and I wrestled him and beat him 3-to-2.

"He had hadn't starting wrestling yet (this season at Central), so his excuse was he wasn't in wrestling shape."

Tyler Burrell finished sixth at the state tournament at 285 pounds (heavyweight) last year and is ranked third in the state this season. He picked up two more wins Thursday night in a double-dual against Jefferson and Dubuque Hempstead at Washington.

"I'm wrestling my heart out, trying to do the best I can," he said.

Burrell pinned Mic Vesey of Jefferson in 1:41, but the J-Hawks went home to the west side of Cedar Rapids with a hard-fought 39-30 victory over the Warriors.

Griffin Bollman collected a big victory for Jefferson against Washington when he trimmed Dax Dills, 6-4, in overtime at 106 pounds to give the J-Hawks a 36-30 lead. Patrick (P.J.) Rashed followed with a 7-4 verdict for Jefferson at 113 pounds against Troy Neagle to clinch the meet for the visitors.

"Our kids at the end came through there," Jefferson Coach Dick Briggs remarked. "Grif and P.J., I was real proud of them."

Jefferson skunked Dubuque Hempstead, 60-15, in the other end of its competition. Washington topped Hempstead, 47-24, to get a split for the night.

"We're doing all right," Briggs said. "We're a young team that's green, like we said at the beginning of the year. But we've got eager kids that are anxious to learn and they're hard workers. It's just a fun group."

Burrell is having fun, too. He's lost only once this season and hopes to end his prep career as a champion, both on the mat and in the classroom.

Burrell has a 4.08 GPA (on a 4.0 scale) and has taken advanced placement classes in physics, calculus, literature, U.S. history and European history. He'll be one of Washington's valedictorians at graduation this spring.

"I try to work hard in the classroom," he said.

Burrell is trying to decide whether he wants to join his brother at Central College next year or enroll at Iowa State. He's also trying to decide whether he wants to be an athlete in college after excelling in football and wrestling at Washington.

"I think I'm going to Iowa State. It's not definite," he said. "I wasn't going to play any sports if I went to Iowa State, but I'm thinking about maybe playing both. I'm not positive I'm going to go there."

He does not have a favorite sport.

"Not anymore," he said. "It used to be football, but I've really gotten into wrestling over the last four years. It's kind of equal."

Kelly May and Shavez Butler won two matches for Jefferson on the mat Thursday. May collected a pin and a technical fall, while Butler had a pin and decision.

Drake Hickok posted a pair of pins for Washington. Trey Schuler, Jordin Eicher, Trevor Luebe, Kaisar Herz and Burrell also were double-winners for the Warriors.

The Warriors won six of 11 actual bouts against the J-Hawks, but Washington forfeited three straight matches at 182, 195 and 220 due to injuries to give the J-Hawks 18 gift points and turn the match in Jefferson's favor.
