Lassen hopes to be cleared on Wednesday

Wednesday will go a long way in determining the chances of Matt Lassen returning to the Linn-Mar basketball team this season.

The 6-foot-4 junior suffered a serious head injury in a game Dec. 9 against Iowa City West. He's been idle since then, but will be examined by a doctor Wednesday to see where he stands.

"We're kind of hoping that's the day he gets cleared and then we'll take some time to work him back in," Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson said Friday night. "When he gets released, we'd like to get him two weeks of full practices.

"We just don't know, he may go one day of practice and may not be able to go the next," Robertson said. "If we could get him back ideally by February, that would be great."

Lassen recently had an MRI that showed he was recovering from the head injury.

Lassen hit his head twice on the floor against Iowa City West, once after contact with a West player and again after teammate Marcus Paige accidentally landed on him. He suffered a concussion, bleeding on the brain and swelling. He also had a seizure moments after the accident while being treated on the floor.

Lassen spent four days in area hospitals and didn't attend school the rest of December. He has been back at school in January and has been attending practices, but not working out.

He has missed just a half-day of school since the break and was on the bench for the Lions' 63-45 win Friday night over Cedar Rapids Washington.
