Breitbach honors family name at Xavier

If your last name is Breitbach and you compete at Xavier High School (or Regis in days gone by), chances are you're a pretty good athlete.

Say hello to Molly Breitbach, a sophomore on the Xavier track team who is doing her best to uphold the family name.

Breitbach captured the 100 and 200 meter dashes at the 14th Annual Xavier Invitational Friday with some of the fastest times in the Mississippi Valley Conference this season.

She won the 100 in 12.59 seconds, then beat Kaz Brown of Cedar Falls to the tape in a tight 200 in 26.77 seconds. Brown was clocked in 26.79, just two-hundedths of a second behind.

"It feels really good. All the hard work is paying off," Breitbach said after her twin victories.

Breitbach's grandfather is Dick Breitbach, the Hall of Fame coach and former Xavier principal. Her father is John Breitbach, a former Regis athlete, and she's got all sorts of aunts, uncles and cousins who have represented the family.

"There are a lot of them," Molly said proudly. "And some of them were cheerleaders."

Molly's mother, Lora, ran track in high school in Washington (Iowa), so she has good genes on both sides of the family.

Xavier Coach Russ Camacho thinks Breitbach has potential, but noted she's just scratching the surface at the beginning of her sophomore campaign.

"I think she has a lot of work to do," Camacho said. "I'm pretty pleased overall with her performance right now. We've got a long way to go.

"I think she has the tools. We have to refine the tools."

Breitbach has big goals this season. "I want to qualify individually for the Drake Relays and for state," she said. "I hope to achieve that."

She said she enjoys carrying the family name, even though it might come with fairly high expectations. "It's good, though, because I really like it," she said.

Cedar Falls dominated the Xavier Invitational by winning 11 of 19 events and compiling 212 points, leaving the four other teams in their tracks. Dubuque Senior nudged Kennedy for second place, 106 to 105. North Scott placed fourth and Xavier was fifth.

Alex Bartz won the high jump for Xavier at 5 feet.

Allison Culver claimed the 3000 meter run for Kennedy in 11:06.51. Aarionna Craig-Dothard won the long jump for the Cougars at 15-11 1/4.
