Marion taking big squad to state track meet

VINTON - The Marion Indians mauled the competition at the boys Class 3A state qualifying track meet in Vinton Thursday.

As a result, the Indians will be taking a big contingent to the state tournament in Des Moines next Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Marion won seven events and captured the team championship with 166.5 points for a whopping 72.5-point victory over runnerup Center Point-Urbana.

The Indians also finished second in six events at the state qualifier. That's significant, because the top two finishers in each event automatically qualify for the state meet. In addition, eight at-large berths in each event from around the state will be announced on Friday.

Lukas Mees claimed three gold medals for Marion. He won the 3200 and 1600 meter runs and anchored the distance medley to the victory stand.

Greg Sam won the 800 meter run for the Indians and Justin Dolley captured the discus. Marion also won the shuttle hurdle relay and the 4x200 relay.
