DUBUQUE -- Hempstead had all five bowlers roll better than 426 series and rolled past Jefferson, 3390-3023, Friday in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys bowling match.
Dan Healy rolled games of 246 and 220 for a 466 series that led Jefferson (9-5, 5-3 MVC). James Bruce was close behind with games of 237 and 228 for a 465 series. Michael Kilts also rolled well with a 214 high game and 404 series.
The J-Hawks ran into a buzzsaw. The No. 6 bowler for Hempstead (6-2, 6-2), whose score did not count, rolled a 408 series.
"When 408 is low man out, you are in trouble," Jefferson Coach Virg Cerveny said.
Hempstead's 3390 was the second-highest match total in the conference this season behind a 3498 Waterloo East rolled against Jefferson in December. The Mustangs' 2302 score was the highest in the first round by a conference team this season.
